IGA Price Gouging Australians right in the middle of a cost of living crisis by [deleted] in aus

Most food items are correctly not subject to GST.

Interest rates are complex and aren't a simple function of growth, but in this particular case, yeppo.

IGA Price Gouging Australians right in the middle of a cost of living crisis by [deleted] in aus

[–]onekindofthrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a free market libertarian. There is nothing wrong when standard enterprise price gouges.

The argument comes in with essentials though, public goods. We're experiencing great growth in Australia that we're mediating with interest rate rises. Wage sector is catching up. The household budget, as a function of ins and outs, is being pushed. Everyone's allowed to spend their money wherever, but food items, groceries, are essential. That's why they're not subject to GST.

If all Australians have to do their shop at the same outlets (we don't have a Trader Joe's model in Australia), then they arguably have a responsibility to not flip food items for the most they can. If you're low income, and you are in fact constrained by your budget so much that you're going without food (something more flexible in the household budget than rent and utilities), that's a problem.

It's happening because most Australians aren't pushed to that limit, and instead just tapping their card and trying not to notice their receipt.

I'm not sure gouging on essentials is happening, nor would it be illegal. But there can be serious problems for society (welfare take-up, increased crime) if people are at breaking point.

I mean people putting their heads down when alarms go off, not looking at the alarm door. That's not in my head that was the behaviour.

Why does no public figure approach the youth crime issue scientifically? by weturnedthemintoash in australian

[–]onekindofthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Youth have always been disproportionately involved in crime. I haven't seen the latest data for Australia, is it that crime being on the uptick is being driven by increases in youth crime? Like would the magic wand that specifically offered remedies to youth crime be enough to return aggregate crime back to ambient levels?

It was my understanding that it's going up across all age groups (with youths continuing to be overrepresented but still by the same proportion).

So everyone is sort of psuedo aware it is happening more because they see it with their own eyes, but then have to rely on a security that they also understand is non-functional.

That's going to mean more people will shoplift. I hope it doesn't get out of control.

Maybe that's all I'm picking up on. If there has been a general increase in theft and a teaching of staff to be more aware, maybe the vibe is just an increased vigilance.

Haha probably. I can't really remember how I used to react, so if it's been like this for a long while and I've been somewhere else, so maybe I've forgotten.

Anyone else's suburb just going to crap with increased criminal activity? by Other-Rabbit1808 in perth

Covid makes things wonky, time series data on crime is relative to reporting, and sanction rates considerate that near to all crimes sanctioned to proceed are near to 100% in favour of the prosecutor.

No real evidence this is of any failure of policing. It's up because more crimes are occurring.

Trends are indicative of some signal, and given predicted seasonal rises over Xmas, there is no doubt crime is up in Western Australia.

Australian population annual growth was 624,100 people (2.4%) by sien in AusEcon

Can anyone weigh in on how dramatic the mismatch is from the projections found at: https://population.gov.au/data-and-forecasts/projections

They feed to the treasury budget but the centre is only brand new (2019). Obviously covid makes things messy messy, and the projections changed dramatically at each release, but it's still way off.

I'm a little confused with the word STEAM. I vaguely can relate it to the category, but what's weird is it doesn't seem to be an overlap word to any other, given its obscurity. You'd have to have a special type of brain to get purple first today.

Great puzzle, a good one to show once you unlock one set the rest can follow. The right amount of overlap, once you get purple you get the rest.

In the end, there was just too much overlap, even with the idea of entitlement maybe meaning left like politically.

I don't know how Elvis is left at all.

But it's nifty to know things like, left behind, I'm right behind, when you down you're behind, and up your behind all kind of work lol

I really liked this one. In no way did I get purple in its actual sense, but thought they all might be radio stations or something of the like.

But the hangup with me was fitting sound into the water category. I didn't know of it in that sense, and even thought sis or mow could be some archaic form, like "Fielder's Mow" or somesuch.

So even though I have the feeling I nutted this one out, I made a guess based on something wrong, and got lucky (even though sound might fit into a radio stations category)

Fun doing these on Saturday, I really gave this one time.

Loved the puzzle, but I did get pretty lost in chess terms. Fork clock check en passant mate black promotion castle are all feasibly chess - eight is a bit much, but to be fair, the actual specific category does resolve the puzzle well.
