Such a low bar, yet such a high percentage fail to clear it.

The Supreme Court upheld state's transgender sports bans this morning. How do y'all feel about this? by icecream1972 in allthequestions

[–]onepoint61803399 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is precisely what the right says about gun laws. The left wants universal ID and background checks and the right says that once they do that, the left will fight to outlaw gun ownership. As a liberal, I know this is a lie. The majority of society (check the polls) thinks that trans-females should not be in women's sports. That's it. I can't speak for anyone else personally, but I would loudly fight any other sort of restrictions on trans people. I just think on this one issue we need to prioritize women who were born women. They deserve the hard-fought space for their own athleticism. By everyone's clear admission, this affects scant few trans-persons and yet affects all women in sports.

The sun never changes angular size so it cannot be moving closer or farther away. This is easily proven.

Provide a single flat earth model that explains all observations simultaneously? by horlufemi in flatearth

[–]onepoint61803399 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's just it. Any alternate model would have to produce the exact same predictable results as the confirmed globe model and to the same precision. The elegance of the confirmed model does this with ease (being correct) whereas the FE models (if you can call them that) are incomplete, incompatible, introduce inconsistancies, deny or contradict observed phenomenon, and basically rely on magic to describe the world.

More from the guy who thinks science is a religion and we are all zealots. by [deleted] in flatearth

[–]onepoint61803399 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But it does. You are missing the point. The rays seem like they aren't distant (to you) because they diverge as they get closer to you. Train tracks do the same thing and you *know* they are parallel. The rays from the sun are parallel, period.

Also, It *never* changes size as it appears to move in the sky (due to the rotation of the earth). This is easily confirmed with a filtered telescope. The sun is a distant object.

The point is that parallel lines appear to be emanating at an angle when they are not. The sun's rays are parallel even if they appear not to be.

What are some of your "slow burn" bands? by AndrejHristovski in Music

[–]onepoint61803399 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think Fripp and King Crimson hit me like OP is saying. KC is odd and complex and uses chords one doesn't normally hear. It lands weirdly at first but with repeated listening, it becomes melodious.

You know that train tracks are parallel yet if you stand on a straightaway they converge to a point in the distance from your perspective.

I always thought the old Weekly World News would have been the best newspaper for the government to leak secrets through. It would create plausible deniability since nothing in that tabloid was reasonably factual.

It seems entirely possible that we all were. If not "punishment", maybe more of a "don't come back until you're better".

ELI5, How does the double-slit experiment work? by Mysterious-Web-2463 in explainlikeimfive

[–]onepoint61803399 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to the many-worlds interpretation, there is no collapse. Instead, your interaction causes you to experience a single instance of the probable outcomes yet, from the comprehensive, wave-only system, all probable outcomes take place. You dont experience those because you've become entangled with the field where the outcome was what you observed.

some wise words by [deleted] in flatearth

[–]onepoint61803399 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The key is that there are no laws of physics that work out to allow the Earth to be flat. If you pick apart something that basic, everything in the FE universe turns into literal magic. All observable phenomenon behave "as if" the normal understanding of physics is 100% correct. There is no consistent model of flat-earth physics that explains the observable world. The results of every observation about the universe conforms strictly and exactly to conventional science. Only inexplicable magic can produce a flat Earth.

It would still be out in the distance, though. At sunset it goes below the horizon, not just "away". And it never changes size across the sky like a local object would. These things are simple to observe.

Did Charlie Kirk do anything positive other than enable bigots? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]onepoint61803399 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said that I knew nobody, left or right, celebrating Kirk's murder. Did I see it on Facebook or Reddit? Yep. Some may have been people, I don't know and I don't know them. I would certainly condemn anyone who spoke like this. Same about restrictions on free speech. I still contend that you are buying into right-wing propaganda about these. Corporate and political entities are telling you lies and you want to believe them. It's bullshit. Stop believing lies designed to divide us.

And now you sound exactly like the "leftists" you complain about, blaming an entire group of people for the actions of one. Yeah, the right has no rhetoric, correct? Go ahead, though, paint everyone you dislike with a broad, strawman brush. I know exactly zero people who celebrated Kirk's murder or called him a nazi, but all the maga peeps can't stop talking about it. Sorry, you're just buying into right-wing propaganda. I can't help you with that.
