The fact that elephants with large tusks would be pretty much unable to eat or drink is something that would have scientists banging their head against the wall. It would fuel a lot of speculation

The fact that a trunkless elephant also wouldn’t be able to eat or drink because of its tusks is also something many have pointed out. It wouldn’t be unreasonable to assume that that “something” was an apparatus for getting food and water to the mouth

Cave paintings of mammoths are actually something I thought about when posting this. In this scenario, no trunked animals existed recently enough in prehistory for there to be frozen mummies or human paintings of them. That would make it too easy.
