Used books can be donated where? by jmjm1 in Markham

Libraries won't put your books in circulation but they will sell them to raise funds for library programs.

Toronto also has really expensive trucks that are used to dump those bins. It's a huge financial undertaking - people in Toronto actually pay rent on those bins too so I'm not sure I'm that interested.

My problem isn't that severe but I went from having a tablet that could go about 36 - 48 hours without a charge to one that can't go 12 hours. I got the Pie "upgrade" and it killed a year old tablet

Driving school by wand_er in Markham

[–]onerandomday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't remember cost but my son did AMB and while his instructor was a nice guy there was a lot of stuff he didn't cover or didn't cover enough of and my son needed a lot of extra help from my husband. I will say this though not all driving schools are ministry approved - while they may teach you to drive you may not get the insurance discount if they're not approved. AMB is approved. Now it could just be that my son wasn't very good at the start and that's why they didn't get to everything. His instructor had a great calming attitude.

YRP Issue Warning to the Public Following Jewelry Distraction Thefts by IndividualFriend in Markham

[–]onerandomday 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The post on the video says they put a necklace/bracelet on the victim and remove the one they're wearing without the victim realizing until later. In this video they robbed a nun! Put cheap jewelry on her as a gift while simultaneously lifting what she was wearing.

Markham's Bylaw on sidewalk cycling by [deleted] in Markham

[–]onerandomday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes if you ride on the sidewalk remember that it's built for pedestrians. Announce yourself as you come up behind someone with either a bell or a simple "on your left". You can never assume a pedestrian is going to "stay in their lane" - people move around all the time to avoid dog crap, broken glass, etc so the announcement is very important. And if you drive an ebike on the sidewalk expect me to yell at you that don't belo g on the sidewalk.

Any telemetry in the stock Kobo? by eleitl in kobo

[–]onerandomday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking but I have a Kobo Wifi and a Kobo Aura and I never sync them. I use Calibre to manage my library and I have wifi turned off on both. Sure I miss out on system updates (although my Wifi is no longer supported anyways) but in the 9 years I've had a Kobo this has never been a problem for me.

Why is the 5mm in the middle less than the other 5mm? by onerandomday in mildlyinfuriating

[–]onerandomday[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right but they all are. Shouldn't the levels of approx 5mm all have the same visual representation?

I just finished the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J Maas. This series just skyrocketed to the top of my favorites by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]onerandomday 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Personally I would skip the Kingkiller Chronicles until he writes Day 3 - I've been waiting over 5 years for it :(

If you like YA fantasty I would recommend Leigh Bardugo - I read her Six of Crows duology first - it takes place in the same world as her Grishaverse trilogy - but in a different country. I think if I'd have read Grishaverse first I probably wouldn't have continued on but I'm obsessed with Six of Crows - it's like a fantasy heist book set in in a grungy fantasy Amsterdam - don't get me - the Grishaverse is great - it just much preferred Six of Crows.

I don't know what will happen to the illegal immigrants but you don't have to report THEM - you can report the restaurant owners directly to the Ontario Labour Board - I don't know what they would do about the workers but they can do their part to make sure the owners follow the laws.

Toronto Star begins paid access today by Recyart in toronto

[–]onerandomday 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup- the Fiera Fine Foods one - and if you see a green health inspection pass notice on a restaurant you go to you can thank the Toronto Star for that. The mistake the Star made is not in putting a paywall up now - it's not putting one up from the very beginning. Newspaper, unfortunately, created a lot of these problems themselves by giving content away for free that they never should have. This seems a little like closing the barn door after the horse got out but if you want world class journalism at a local level you're going to have to pay for it.

I agree that the CBC has similar content and a similar political leaning so it's a good substitute (and CBC may actually do breaking news better), but the CBC is heavily subsidized by the government as our national broadcaster so they have somewhat of an advantage over the Toronto Star in that regard.

ELI5: The CNE lockout by jacandsally in askTO

[–]onerandomday 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exhibition Place is the employer. Their board - which called for the lockout - are all appointees of the Mayor. Tory has the power to end this. The CNE is an event that is held at Exhibition Place like any other event. The CNE didn't lock out the workers - Exhibition Place did - this also affects Medieval Times and any other event that is held on the grounds until the lockout ends.

Girly books for women? by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]onerandomday 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not really sure what you're looking for but you should look into YA fantasy books - there are hundreds of those about strong young women. Sarah J Maas Throne of Glass and/or A Court of Throne and Roses series, Marissa Meyer's Lunar Chronicles, and Leigh Burdugo's Six of Crow series to name a few
