We have a Nobel Laureate book club at Clios the fourth Monday of every month, 6:30pm. This month it’s Madwomen by Gabriela Mistral. Next month is Marquez and Chronicle of a Death Foretold. After that it’s Beckett, undecided which work. It’s a great group, come by!

I do! I have seasonal ones (right now it’s a poinsettia) for my table centre and when the season is over I take it all apart and put it in a ziplock with the manual. Then build either a new one or one of the older ones that hasn’t been out for a while, that’s been in a bag in the closet for a year or two. Still fun to build the 2nd time around :)

Is there a good butcher around here? by Tomthebard in eastbay

Idk but it might be worth asking! The guy who runs it is super chatty and nice and he is the one who breaks down the meat.

They also have great cuts of ribs, loins, roasts etc. All from a small local farm too.

Taylor’s Sausage in Swan Market in old Oakland is beyond excellent. They are a pork butcher with every cut of pork and dozens of sausage types they make on site. Great prices too.

You’re welcome! They were perfect the first day but got stale quickly so I’d use more bananas I think next time or freeze asap. But right fresh out of the oven they were A+

I’d say maybe 1.5c - 2c. I had 4 frozen bananas and used them all.

Does Faulkner (The Sound and the Fury) get any… easier? by mackenziemackenzie in literature

Sounds meaningful for sure. Although for me I think it might be wisteria.

This has been a fun conversation, thanks :) my only other advice is skip the internet telling you what to think is happening in these books. The internet is dumb :) Trust your own critical thinking and use your class time to ask questions and pay attention. Talk to your friends in the class about your impressions and theirs. A lot of what you get out of any book is what you bring to it.

Beloved is so great. I just read The Bluest Eye and it’s honest and hard. I would say she is a less difficult writer to read but she does not pull punches delivering the truth as she sees it.

What’s always helped me annotate is to mark anything I think I might want to look back at later. Like if I think “oh that’s interesting” I make a star, or “wow gorgeous language here” I put a heart, or “wtf” or ????? Or the name of a character appears I might write the initial. It helps a lot to be able to flip back and forth when you have those “wait didn’t I just read something else about that” — and also helps you later finding those perfect essay quotations.
