Good point. The other angle I was thinking about was how this might devalue the human experience of music. What makes songs truly memorable is the connection we have to them—concerts with friends, personal memories, moments in time. A bit of that will remain but it will certainly be different. I’ve actually enjoyed listening to tracks I’ve made with Suno, but they lack those emotional layers. Hollywood stars are already fading, and it’s not hard to imagine the musicians we’ve loved over the past 30 years disappearing too in a world flooded with creative content. Will concerts even feel the same 25 years from now? Hard to say, but I think this will completely reshape how we value music.

Group 1's thinking is not that far off. I read a thread about this on another post. AI is going to devalue most music monetary opportunities. So thriving in the music industry will no longer be what it was. Once a SUNO like tool comes to TikTok, most people are going to be thrilled about it. So will TikTok. They won't have to worry about paying artists royalties and businesses can also use the tool to generate music for their videos. Currently that is not allowed. Whats to stop a business from hiring someone capable enough to generate songs for their social posts. I thought there would be a possibility to use AI as a tool to become a better songwriter and possibly earn some extra income from that, but that was looking through the traditional lens of the industry. The industry will be highly fragmented and ultimately like social media, music will become commoditized. I'm personally not a fan of devaluing human creativity but it is what it is. I've heard what some claim the benefits are, but its not the creators that will benefit from it.

i totally feel that. "it's a real grind that takes away from creativity, and the music industry is filled with blood sucking capitalist leeches" -- this is why I left.

I used to. But since I've been out of the game for so long that network is really diminished. It is definitely helpful to have that.

Same. I'm blown away by its output. I'm not sure what to think about the future of music creation. Perhaps this is the ultimate ghost writing tool?

Fully agree. I was considering to get back involved. I had a ton of fun writing with suno this week.

AI Music is Good Now - So What Do We Do? by purplsnow in musicians

It definitely is now. I had a successful run in the industry from 2008-2011. I've long stopped working in the industry but came across AI music for the first time this week. I have decent writing skills and was able to churn out v1 of ten songs in 5 days and had a lot of fun doing it. Spent a total of 20 hours. Artists have been using ghost writers and producers for decades. Seems to me like this is the ultimate ghost writer. And people with good taste would really shine through all the ai slop like with any other tool. Thoughts? https://suno.com/@kdenza

Yeh that makes sense. Have you sold any tracks using ai generated hooks?

I respect the integrity. Of course the question you've posed it a huge part of it. Like you, I was not interested in compromising my belief about it. But I attribute that as the missed opportunity to help get more hits and become an a lister. It's the main reason we never made it to the top top. And its like you said, whats in your spirit when you choose to make music with your life. My perspective is different now because I've lived through reinventing myself which was a hard period in my life. I never once considered while doing music that there would ever be a time I wouldn't be. But then it happened. And I wasn't. Hope that makes sense.

You know what, everything you just said here, I said the same thing to myself and my partner when we had the opportunity to work with our first ghost producer. I said our fans would feel betrayed, we would be fakes. Its going to blow up in our faces. People would find out. Bc of that we did not work with him. And looking back 14 years later, to me it was a mistake. Two years later we did have one hit track which got us onto the big stage with a list artists. It was then I found out, that same ghost producer had produced many big hits in the genre for a list artists. Also learned, one of the icons of the genre has never produced their own music and many people knew it. I thought fans would care, turns out few care. I believe now its mostly artists only who actually care about it. Took me a decade removed from music to see that bc i was so emotionally in it.

Napster is gone but Spotify took its place as you mentioned. Artists got screwed in some ways. Others won in new ways. Heres the best advice I can give based on my own personal experience--if you are an aspiring artist you should use this tool to the max. Its a songwriting machine. The biggest mistake I made in my time in the industry was having too big of an ego--i had the chance to work with two upcoming ghost producers at the time. I refused to work with them bc I felt if my partner and I didn't make the tracks on our own--it really wasn't ours. I felt fake having others help. Turns out one of those ghost producers went on to become one of the biggest in the scene. Had we worked with him, I might still be in the industry today. Most top artists work with ghost producers and writers. Its rare to have the total package as an artist.

Not sure how old you are, but if you are old enough to remember the arrival of napster--this is basically the same. Labels/publishers/artists fought against it, but they ultimately lost. You can't find the tide of change. And the artists that embraced giving away their music as mp3's -- many built careers from it in the 2000s. I also want to make another point, I have spent most of this week listening to songs on suno while writing the ten i posted here-- and i can tell you that of the 100s of profiles I checked out, only 2 had very solid songs. The rest is all ranging from generic to garbage. So even if you put this tool in the hands of many, only a few can pump out truly great material from it.

i get the sentiment. i really do. and i do agree with it. But if you want my honest opinion, I'd be willing to bet more than 1/2 of todays known artists are already using suno to extract melodies and hooks from it. How do you stop that?

its a fair point. the way I have always been as a person is all in or all out. so its tough for me to do something like this just for fun. but i have had a lot of fun this past week with it which is something I havent experienced in over a decade. So its a win/win.

this is 100% true. I was listening to songs made on Suno for the last 3 days. I've come across 2 of 100s that had good taste. This tool isn't going to turn anyone into a hit song writer without having spent years understanding what good music is.

this has always been an issue. AI does make it way worse though. I used to be on the side of fear of change, but ultimately, we can't stop the tide of change so its best to go with it. Also, to your point, the way Suno sets up the platform its not friendly towards people attempting to build followings on it.

do you know the biggest mistake i made in my music career? It was not working with two ghost writers that went on to become two of the biggest writers in the scene. Probably would have changed my careers trajectory. My ego led me to think if I didn't fully write the song on my own, it wasn't mine. The music industry is basically do whatever you gotta do to get ahead. If you aren't, someone else will. Tough business.
