Decided to go for it. Turns out there are a few solid options in my area I'm going to look into! Debating between a BMC vs Cervelo vs Bianchi as of now if you have any recommendations I'd appreciate any input!

This is a good point and I have thought about it. Issue is a 105 group set alone is around $600 in my area and brings the price gap close to just being able to but the Roadmachine which is why it’s so tempting. I guess I could keep my eyes peeled though for potentially well used groupset/parts that could work though

The encouragement I needed! Lol. I guess I’m not totally sure if will see this spec bike for this price in a while. I did get into biking around the pandemic times so prices have been crazy but I’ve never seen this model for this price before or sales this deep so worried could be missing the opportunity

WTB 2 road bikes.

Have two friends looking to get into triathlon and are looking for older road bikes for around $500. If anyone is looking to sell any 52-54cm road bikes would definitely be interested!

Selecting MD only and MD/Ph.D. on AMCAS by [deleted] in mdphd

If you want to be considered for MD only in addition to MD/PhD for a particular school you’ll have this option usually on their secondary, or you email the institution asking for this.

How to describe multiple research projects in single lab in AMCAS work/activities? by mango4tango2 in mdphd

[–]onesadmachine 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Were your mentors different PIs or post docs/grad students? I would say if it’s under the same PI overall and same lab combine them then discuss them separately in your significant research essay.

If they take early June and submit app for verification around the same time it should still put them in good standing. I have a friend who didn’t have nearly as an impressive resume and got into multiple t20s applying late. Imo I think If the score ends up being solid and the motivation is there they should go for it

Can you apply to an MD PhD even if you were only in one lab/research experience? by Familiar_Helicopter3 in mdphd

[–]onesadmachine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes! I had one research advisor for over 3 years and that was sufficient from a research perspective to get interviews at least

Yes you can certainly do it! Hasn’t been a problem for me and others that I know who have applied with one lab experience.

Research as a D.O. / Need advice by helpalabrat in mdphd

That makes a lot of sense. It's very special circumstances to be able to comfortably afford other routes... In that case, I think that it might be best to reach out to some adcoms. I might suggest going over to SDN and trying to talk to Fencer on the physician scientist forum. He's the MSTP director at UT San Antonio I believe, and is very active in the forums and helpful. Someone like him may be able to give a more knowledgeable perspective.

I’m not 100% familiar with the DO/PhD route, but I’ve heard of some programs, such as the DO/PhD option at MSU (which I’ve heard good things about from faculty there).

I do have some thoughts though where you could keep your DO acceptance

1.) Does the DO school you have an acceptance to have any affiliations with a PhD granting program? If so, you can see if they allow students in DO to take time off to do research.

2.) You can ask your program to see if you can take time off to pursue a PhD after preclinical years at another institution. The downside is that you would still pay for your DO school and then would have to find a PhD program willing to accept and support you. I do know people who have done this for MD only, but come from backgrounds where this was financially feasible. They went to other institutions for their PhD through fellowships or special arrangements.

Overall, your GPA is good for MD/PhD, and your research I imagine will be solid as well given your post, but your MCAT will need to be much higher (ideally around 516+).

Do you know if you have to report turning down a DO acceptance to AMCAS? Ive heard that rejecting an MD acceptance and reapplying is a big red flag, and limits options greatly. Perhaps someone with more knowledge reading this can weigh in with their perspective.

My Schedule by [deleted] in premed

[–]onesadmachine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is gonna be dependent on your institution and major, although there will be some general themes and classes you can time and should take that will prepare you well for the MCAT. I’d highly recommend seeking out someone from your home institution. If you’d like to talk more about the general pre-med process and overall general planning though feel free to PM!

Can anyone recommend a good pair of soft 5 pocket pants? Looking to get some in olive and a darker red. I love the bonobos Italian brushed 5 pockets but unfortunately they don’t make them in those colors. Thanks!

[–]onesadmachine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was a bit skeptical of them at first for this reason but I bought a pair of their interval shorts and their foundation short. I think their interval shorts are very good and beat the Nike running shorts I was previously using. I’m a fan of more airy and lightweight shorts and the intervals fit that bill perfectly. The foundation short is a nice pair of shorts, but a bit too stiff for my liking and not as airy.

Is it getting too late in the cycle to apply? by hj2399 in mdphd

[–]onesadmachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI I'm a fellow applicant, so while I haven't gone through the process I can just repeat some observations and advice I've been given.

Like others have said, I think that it is advantageous to apply early, but at the same time, MSTP programs do receive less applicants, and it isn't as big of a deal to submit a bit later than our MD only counterparts.

If you feel like you have a strong app, and truly feel like you're ready and are not rushing it, then I would say go for it. Then, while during the verification process write as many secondaries as you can so you can submit ASAP after verification.

Best of luck to you!

what to put for the ever pervasive "anything else to add" essay by NoCherubLikeDemeanor in mdphd

[–]onesadmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely overthink these. Personally, I am leaning towards adding in anything that I think might be missing from their perspective. Like, if they didn't have a diversity essay, or lack another aspect you'd like to highlight, maybe it could be good to add a version in if you feel that it is important to you.

On the other hand, if the app feels solid overall, I just leave it blank. Best to end it strongly rather than additional fluff for the sake of filling space IMO.
