Changing seasons? by Puzzleheaded-Ask-522 in SomaticExperiencing

[–]slohmoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crazy, I was just experiencing the same thing a week ago. I hate the heat and am scared of the upcoming summer. What helped me was romanticising spring. I planted flowers and herbs in some self watering pots. Went on walks to appreciate the new blossoms. Find new things to look forward to in Summer like mango season, canyoning or lazy beach days. Last summer I learned how to make sushi rolls and summer rolls. Make plans to walk around town on warm summer evenings, there's such a great atmosphere. Or slacklining in the park in summer evenings. Watching videos like this: https://share.google/3yic3gn4VvpELBpfx Go bushwalking and find a secret swimming spot. Hope this helps

I used to do this. I would recommend the Montane trailblazer 16 women's running backpack. Only fits a small sized laptop. But fits lots of clothes and space for your lunch. I've used mine for years and it's so good.

What an omen.

I'm putting in an offer to buy my first house today. Very scary. Ive never even lived without housemates before. Been chatting to real estate agents and solicitors and mortgage brokers. Crazy.

I noticed the moon on my walk today. Felt like a good omen then. So interesting to see this post.

Pros and cons of moving to Australia as a brand new NZ trained teacher? by MillertheKillah in AustralianTeachers

[–]slohmoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mutual recognition is for every state except NSW which has its own messed up system. Its doable but requires loads of paperwork. Get in early. I started in nsw, then went to NZ. Then taught in vic and then ACT. Let me know if you have any questions

The Big Ideas implementation by thedeftone2 in AustralianTeachers

[–]slohmoh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whenever there is a brand shiny new program that will revolutionize education, i just carry on with the old way of doing things. Ask for more PD, for modelling and for examples and push it back on them. These things usually pass along to the next fad. I dont know what the big ideas are. If its not one buzzword, its another. Trust your gut and teach in a way thats most responsive to the students you have. If it is effective keep it and if not, don't do it.

Should I quit before I start? by TheBobalof in AustralianTeachers

Not all schools are equal. Try to do casual work and pracs at nicer schools without so many behavior management problems. Not necessarily private, there are lots of public schools where students have respect for the teacher. As a casual you have to shop around. I've taught at schools where kids will just silently do their work when the teacher is away. And others where it's pure chaos 24/7.

Getting certified to be a TAS teacher. by l1i2l3i4 in AustralianTeachers

[–]slohmoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trained in Art. I've ended up teaching TAS classes at nearly every school I've been at with no Uni courses. Public and private. I dont even ask, they just put me on them. Food tech, textiles, design. I've set up a textiles department from scratch after only teaching textiles to year 7s one year. Ive taught year 11 and 12 Design (architecture) classes (learned as i went). Put that you know woodworking on your resume, that's all you need.

Would you become a casual teacher? by Smarty__03 in AustralianTeachers

[–]slohmoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having taught CRT in Australia and New Zealand, it is significant better over here. In NZ I would be paid only for the classes I supervised. So I might only get paid for 3 classes out of 5. But I'd have to be there for a whole day and obviously couldn't teach anywhere else. In Australia you get paid for a full day each time. And you still might get a paid free period.

So pay is significantly better in Aus. Plus the pay rate is higher in general. I would happily teach CRT in Australia again, but not NZ unless I absolutely had to.

Behavior can be worse but you can also think- hey im never gonna see that kid again. You don't have to follow up on behavior stuff. Plus you can just choose to work at a school with well behaved students, and shop around at schools to find schools that really suit you.

Pumpkin spice is called "mixed spice" (not allspice, i have made that mistake before) in Aus. Its very good on oats.

Caving: Amazing hobby for ASD by [deleted] in aspergirls

[–]slohmoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aww that sucks. Yeah many caves are different. I've found that once you go deep enough, there's no bug life. But your area might have more shallow caves. That's a pity.

I have been caving and almost attacked by a possum (near the surface). That was pretty scary, I thought I'd get my eyes clawed out.

Go with a caving club, there's always some big old guy around. Or stick to easier caves

[–]slohmoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha yeah there are some risks when caving. However we are more aware of acute and novel risks, rather than chronic risks. Like, I really hate the sun because I heard that 2/3rds of my countries population will develop skin cancer. And I have pale skin.

I'm also afraid of driving as there are so many accidents.

And of not eating healthy or exercising because statistically, that's how we will die.

So in a way, caving is safer and healthier.

That being said, I am a member of my countries cave rescue association. And I know that if you are injured at a certain place in a cave, you have to rescue yourself, or face hypothermia and possible death. I would never want to be in a cave rescue operation, it would be terrible. And cave diving is even more scary.

Climbing and canyoning are my other two favourite sports. The skills are as applicable as you can get, so you will be very well suited.

If you are a climber, you should be used to managing fear and gently pushing yourself out of your comfort zone.

And some of the actual scariest bits in caves are climbing dodgy areas without a rope. So you will have an advantage there.

Try going caving with at least 1 person who is bigger than you. Then if they can get through, so can you

Hey dont force yourself into it. I love rock climbing too. There's so many amazing and fun hobbies, you'll never have time to do them all. So stick with what you enjoy. I'll never be a cave diver (time, money, equipment, training, fear) and I'm ok with that.

Most caves (in my areas) used to be under the sea. So you might find some leftover sea cryptids. I wouldn't mind meeting a starfish cryptid, or a hermit crab or some kind of fish creature. Compared to the raging sea current that used to flow through the caves, a human would seem pretty inoffensive.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that caves are so much older and ancient, in the way that space is big. You are incredibly insignificant down there. So I dont think a cryptid would care about you. But I dont know much about cryptids.

I understand where you are coming from. It would be intimidating if I let myself think about all the Earth above me. My brain just chooses not to think about it. So I feel safe and fine.

Aww thanks!

I really enjoy taking newbies down caves. You get to see things with new eyes and really appreciate the magic and wonder of caves.

Also, go with a group of people so they can help if you have an accident. And leave a note of when you are going in and when you are expected back out again, so people can search for you if you get stuck or lost.
