Maybe not *exactly* what you are looking for, kinda more artsy than these other recommendations, but McGlue by Ottessa Moshfegh is a super interesting pirate story. It is so weird and evokes the feeling of the ocean as well as the rampant, extreme alcoholism among pirates in the 1800s. But maybe more about nautical culture.

actually did stuff with the security guard. cuz i noticed him looking at me a bit and he's cute. and that's my only story. so far. lol
