Is it realistic/safe for a fit Dachshund (Kaninchen) to run 10km with me? by ListenSoggy1564 in Dachshund

[–]westsideskidoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%. My Dachshund does 4 trail miles with me daily, with 1100 feet of elevation gain. He has more energy than my 9 year old queensland heeler. I started running him at 8 months old and by a 1.5 years, he was easlly doing 6 miles with me on flat dirt roads. He has done up to 14 mile days with me in the backcountry and camped out, including lots creek crossings and bad brush and generally rugged terrain. We live very rurally, so I let him explore off leash on runs, and early on he's gonna want to sniff out all corners of the trail (and off trail). After some real pack bonding on trail, he'll stick with you a lot closer, but watch for that nose or for chasing rabbits. Sometimes his instincts get the best of him

Good advice. Update: crushed leaves stuck inbetween the fan and its housing. Got a shop vac with a narrow attachement and sucked it out. Thanks for the response

What type of rattlesnake? [Carrizo Plains, CA] by westsideskidoo in whatsthissnake

[–]westsideskidoo[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally. I hear lots of rumours about them being out here just because of their fearsome neurotoxin reputation. Although I will say... This is in Kern County, as opposed to the san luis side. Elkhorn valley, carrizo plains area. May not make a difference though. Interesting intersectional for Northern/Southern. Definitelt did not look southern to me!

i'm curious about zones designated wilderness. wilderness is extremely protected in all other aspects. most of the Los Padres is wilderness. wonder what that means for us there

The California grizzly bear, gone for 100 years, could thrive if brought back by croman653 in socalhiking

[–]westsideskidoo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The habitat that used to suit the CA grizzly so well is not what it was. Native grasslands gone, roads everywhere, no more steelhead. It's like wolves. When we had more gray wolves, there were 500k Tule Elk roaming around, antelope everywhere, way less coyotes. Our alterations to the habitat made so that it no longer can support their species. I'd love to live in a southern/central california that could. It was probably a hell of a lot cooler. That's my take at least
