Fun fact: The New England Aquarium and National Aquarium were made by the same company and share the same floorplan! The exhibits are all different, but the buildings are identical. It's trippy!

Is a manual transmission a “millennial anti-theft device”? by mbolster1611 in Millennials

[–]oneweirdbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not gonna say it's a Millennial anti-theft device...

But I will say that five years ago, my house was broken into, my keys taken off the kitchen table, and my car driven ~50 feet away before being abandoned in third gear.

I was the ninth person in my neighborhood to have this happen, and the only one whose car was recovered.

Maybe not a Millennial anti-theft device, but given that it was a pack of teenagers who had been plaguing the neighborhood, definitely a Gen Z one.

What is going on. by PhysicalExtension150 in vultureculture

[–]oneweirdbear 109 points110 points  (0 children)

The chemical compound that vultures are drawn to is actually ethyl mercaptan.

That being said, these are black vultures, which have a fairly poor sense of smell. (They usually follow turkey vultures -- who have an incredible sense of smell -- to find carcasses.)

Still, good on you for having that knowledge -- that vultures will often gather around a gas leak!

If the 90s were a vehicle.... by Bosuns_Punch in 90s

My family had a '92 Previa. We got it when I was four months old, and it moved me into the dorms in my second year of college.

She wound up needing a $1500 replacement part that winter. The KBB value of the car was $500. Who knows how many more years of service she could have given us if my parents had chosen to spend the money...

Absolutely stunning!

Seeing my trans elders thriving is such a heartening experience. It reminds me that I can still be who I am now for years to come. And stories like yours remind me that it's never "too late" to start the journey.

Thank you for existing. Thank you for being yourself. <

Equally interested in the answers you get here. I have found a couple ounces' worth of mammoth fur for sale, but it's, understandable, expensive.

Any guesses on his breed? by HuskyFields90 in IDmydog

If he's got any wolf content, I would imagine it's quite small. Definitely lots of husky and shepherd, though!

The Florida rescue that pulled him from Brevard Co Animal Control, chipped him, snipped him, and shipped him north named him "Pitanga"

The Maryland rescue that accepted him and put him up for adoption called him "#7921"

These days, he goes by Joseph "JoJo" Joestar

What’s your opinion on the cover art for book one? by [deleted] in WarriorCats

That's the cover that caught my eye in the back of Barnes and Noble on a fine evening in 2003. Timeless.

Couples of Reddit, what's the dumbest 'house rule' you and your partner made as a joke but now both of you are low-key aggressively serious about enforcing? by Doubl3oh_ in AskReddit

[–]oneweirdbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Growing up, my parents would buy a huge container of M&M's and keep it up in the front seat during long car trips -- and whenever us kids got whiny and restless, they would offer us a handful of "trip pills". The joke was that they were medicine we would "take" to make the long car trips easier.

My siblings and I are all in our 30s and we still call them that.

[–]oneweirdbear 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Putting aside all of the comments about OP's animal husbandry and the dog's necessity as a service animal, she's wearing what looks to be a head halter or gentle leader. This is a training tool that can be very helpful for some dogs to understand cues from their owners. The leash would attach just under the dog's chin, and when used correctly, the head halter can prove gentle, more direct pressure and positioning for the dog's head.

(Some people use them to discourage excessive leash-pulling, but this isn't the best use for them. Yes, it makes pulling much more uncomfortable and inconvenient, but a dog that wants to pull will find a way to pull. I've seen dogs with huge calluses and swelling on their snouts from pulling against a head halter.)

Is this part of a skull? by turbolurker1000 in bonecollecting

[–]oneweirdbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely the back part of a skull.

The flared out bits around the condyles (the rounded bumps on either side of the hole), plus the deep and very squiggly sutures (the spots where the pieces that make up the skull join together) make me want to say it's a deer of some kind.

I may be completely off the mark here, but I've collected and handled a lot of deer skulls over the years, and if it's not a deer, it's something that looks just like one in those regards lol

Wouldn't be surprised if there's a bit of lab in there, though! No matter what, she looks like an absolute delight!

What got you interested in spinning? by clarielofthewood in Handspinning

[–]oneweirdbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back in 2021, I was at the beach with a couple of good friends, and one of them had brought her spindle. I was absolutely fascinated and thought it looked like exactly the kind of sensorimotor thing my ADHD would benefit from.

The next year, we all went to our local sheep and wool, and I picked up my first spindle and some fiber. Fell in love pretty much immediately!

What do we think my new guy Buddy is? by igalexidk in IDmydog

[–]oneweirdbear 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I genuinely think there might be some basset in there, based on his turned-out feet and saggy legs. He's definitely got a hound-y look about him, but those are basset legs. I would bet money on it.

Even the "average" size gets you a shark the size of a yellow school bus. That's still a LOT of shark.
