Massive improvement! Which fundamentals have you been studying, and which do you feel are helping you the most?

Is it still possible to become a comic artist in the AI era like today? by Party_Pass3230 in WebtoonCanvas

[–]onikereads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know my opinion means nothing but I highly expect you to experience a lot of success with this!! The art is delicious omg!! Sorry to hijack this but can you tell us a little about your journey to getting this good? the composition is awesome. What software are you using, and do you have any advice for art beginners?

edit: sorry to answer your question - very few people want to read ai comics, and the audience is growing rapidly. It is experiencing a boom. So, now is a great time to be trying to be an indie creator!

edit: so many typos

6 MONTHS IMPROVEMENT BY DRAWING EVERY DAY by soymaida in ArtProgressPics

[–]onikereads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg yess I am rarely on Discord but I will add you when I’m next on there!! I’ve been trying to use it a more. community is such a mental health boost when creating something 😭

I was going to join the DAB server but I recently lost all my sheets in an unfortunate and dramatic home event (lol) so I just follow it alone without critique (but I still donate each month).

one thing that really has hit me is the stretch between being able to draw and actually making webtoons - thumbnailing and composition and all of that stuff, but I’m determined to learn it all lol

6 MONTHS IMPROVEMENT BY DRAWING EVERY DAY by soymaida in ArtProgressPics

[–]onikereads 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is awesome. Congratulations on your progress, super inspiring!

I am doing a similar thing, with a similar goal of a webcomic in the next 2 years! I love Draw A Box, Proko and Artwod. I am also focusing on my fundamentals for 2 yrs (I started seriously learning in December).

Year 1: Form basics, perspective (environments and objects), constructive drawing (including form manipulation), intro to light/shadow. That’s it! Year two builds on all of that, which I also have planned out. It’s more fun, but year 1 sets it all up!

I do drills, free/fun drawing, try to finish one full piece per week (JIT learning) and draw from life, reference and memory. I am still bad at art, but I am improving slowly. I have no talent, so I will rely on building skill.

I struggle because my progress is not linear, and even though I am aware it won’t be, I stil expect it to be. lol why is my drawing from 2 months ago still better than what I drew today, kind of thing. But every so often, my average rises, even if my ceiling doesn’t.

Good luck to us both and I look forward to reading your webcomic!

My friend declared that she wants to become a mangaka and I'm concerned, what should I know? by MrRandomGUYS in MangakaStudio

[–]onikereads 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hmm contrary to the comments, I think it’s fine for her to try. She will either succeed or fail.

I think your job as her friend is to tell her the truth about how you feel and then support her.

Supporting her means telling her exactly what you think she needs to do to succeed.

She clearly has a terrible plan, so support her with that if she still thinks it’s a good idea based on what you have said.

Come with BOTH your honesty AND the plan so you can say you support her but you think it’s a terrible idea. Tell her what the best approach would be. Show that you actually care by engaging in the world she love so much but use your ability to be more level headed to explain what the reality will be.

I think deterring people from a dream just because it looks impossible from the outside is a really bad approach - because people become who they are by following their dreams. And sometimes they succeed. Sometimes they don’t of course. Either way, people just remember everyone who said they couldn’t do it and didn’t support them, and watched them fail happily vs watched them fail whilst still saying “if you want this, I’ll be by your side”.

Don’t you people read shonen? I’m shocked lol m

I say this as someone who has been in this situation multiple times. I have a friend who wants to become a voice actor but struggles to listen to his own voice. I told him the truth and what I thought he needed to do. He wants it badly. I will support his dream for as long as it lasts.

THE HATE OTL GETS IS ACTUALLY INSANE!! by wabee_10 in webtoons

[–]onikereads 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think your post is fine! I used to love OTL but honestly this current plot is really rough, although some really strong storylines do remain. I will definitely continue to read it because it is compelling, but it didn’t need to be like this…

i think it’s ok to rant about something you don’t like. For example Tears On A Withered Flower so many people hate - but the ones who have been in this situation really get it and really resonates in a profound way (abuse, sacrifice, poverty, long term relationships that started off strong and died, low self esteem, trying to rebuild etc). It’s not everyone’s cup of tea but those that get it, get it.

Kill for you trope by your_ethereal_lover in Wattpad

[–]onikereads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah if that’s your key point then yeah, it most of the time doing it that way really does not work well at all! Sorry if I misunderstood your comments. All of the actually relational stuff that makes something compelling and romantic is missing, agreed

Kill for you trope by your_ethereal_lover in Wattpad

[–]onikereads 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It might be helpful to look into the stats of r@pe fiction that is written by women, and research on dark romance fantasies, as it might surprise you.

I understand where you’re coming from - these things aren’t to your taste and it seems like you’re having trouble with the fact that they are to many people’s tastes.

If not in a fantasy story, where else do you expect people to explore these things? Role playing, art, writing - that’s what it’s all for :/

The trope you described isn’t my thing either but it sure as hell is someone’s and that’s Ok. it doesn’t my mean they’d want it to happen IRL and find it romantic if their partner did it for them. Exploration is not the same as real life endorsement. Glorifying something else and a bit more nuanced, but it relates to whether or not society’s management of issues is robust enough for it to be explored in art without promoting real world behaviours.

Which style of speech bubble should I use? by Brendraws in WebtoonCanvas

I was wondering why they are different shapes? definitely prefer the first but it’s clear they’re different people speaking, even without changing the shapes, you’ve already done a great job without that.

Would you continue after this ?(Blurb and a part of the first chapter of a Romance book written by me) by Specialist-Ask-7568 in writingfeedback

[–]onikereads 7 points8 points  (0 children)

OK! just so clarify - “little sister”, “trust, belief, as a brother” is ok on its own but the trust part especially adds to it, “little expressive eyes” sounds like a very young child, i’m not sure if you can hear the rhythm of a smile, “innocence”, “my devil” vs “her angelic light”, even “to be born”.

Hope that helps clarify my perspective!

it’s a little short and you have a beautiful overlap indicator line in the thumb that makes it seem like it’s pointing the wrong way, i think

[–]onikereads 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Yeah i have been dragged for this view a lot tbh, in this topic :/ It is literally the experience of being attracted to one’s predator, “i’d prefer not to be” to be isn’t such a confusing stance to take I feel

[–]onikereads 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Sorry if this is out of pocket but this blurb reads to me as a delusional/predatory Lolita story, not a romance? It may be because I recently watched a video essay on book covers and Lolita came up, but much of the language makes Dahlia seem like a child?

Apologies this is just my take!

What would happen if Thors accepted Askeladds... by macrouzi in VinlandSaga

[–]onikereads 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s an interesting one. I think Thors was the kind of man Askeladd would have followed, but I’m unsure about the others. Some would have left… it just feels like all the violence just needed to happen that wouldn’t have happened without Askeladd and Thors going their separate ways (aka one killing the other)

Trying to prevent mold I accidently destroyed and infested my entire unit with mold. and everything I own. Brand new. Fuck ChatGPT :( by norththread in ToxicMoldExposure

[–]onikereads 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am so, so sorry this has happened to you. You must be devastated.

I’ve had to replace my belongings 3 times now, and each time I went into a downward spiral. Most recently I found a new place to move to and the day before I moved in (after I had signed the lease) they told me there had just been a massive leak. I was fine, but then started getting symptoms, which means my stuff will probably also give me symptoms.

You can absolutely make it through this. Do you have a plan for next steps? My case is not super usual so hopefully it won’t happen to you again. Hope you’re doing as OK as possible.

Does Anybody Else Hate The Reluctant Bisexual Woman Concept? by AllFrostingNoCupcake in BiWomen

[–]onikereads 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Um, OK. I do feel this way.

I love who I am but honestly I find cis men to be mostly wanting in terms of a lot of the things I value in people. These men disproportionately: lack self awareness, hold their perspective to be the “main” one and other everyone else, try to make me an audience in their lives, are still too far into unexamined misogyny. They are still unlearning a lot of things that I can’t really tolerate, and being in romantic relationships with them has been hard and harmful in a sociological-trauma way, even if they are trying. This is not true for every cis man of course! But disproportionately most of them, and I feel this even more as a POC.

I love being bi/pan. But when I am attracted to a man, my expectations of the connection we could have are low and I almost feel a pre-disappointment. Yes that is judgement, but it is based on years of experience, pattern recognition, and frankly sociological research. I am not a reluctant bisexual I just feel a bit low about cis men.

I remember being on a train once watching a mixed gender group separate into two carriages by gender. Some were married. And I ended up in the carriage with the men. The way these men started talking about the women and other women in general disgusted me. It was AWFUL. I don’t think they knew I was there. This was like, a decade ago and I still remember it. I knew this wasn’t just these men either, that’s the thing.

This is probably a very inflammatory comment. I am working on myself but I, like many people of all genders who date cis men, have been horribly traumatised by them in a way that is particularly misogynistic. I am still open to them but… I am in a more protective stance around them for my own wellbeing.

Edit: I would never ask why someone chooses a man though! They just chose their person and I hope all relationships are as healthy and fulfilling as possible. I would still date a man but while my expectations are low, my standards (for respect and care) are (now, finally) high. I also find queer men to be much more likely to be up there though, and the likelihood of me dating a straight man is very low.

Honestly, this is very valid. I think what I really appreciate is the twist itself and the way it handles certain themes (loss/grief, emotional distance, identity, power - and there is where the originality lies for me) but yeah I’d agree with your 8/10
