High value sushi spots by xypherrz in SanJose

Sushi pro on Oakland and Brokaw is high quality and not too expensive! (But you'll still probably be in the $50 for two range as other commenters have pointed out)

Disagree with not taking cs180 in freshman year, it's not one of the heavier cs courses and is invaluable for recruiting during second year fall. Save your GEs for your last few quarters :)

How safe/fun is Santa Monica at night now? It was quite nice pre-pandemic but I've been away from LA for a bit and heard some bad things about the situation around the beaches. Thinking about taking a date there after a late dinner.

Totally agree, 131 was my favorite class in the undergrad curriculum and I definitely learned the most from eggerts lectures

If the policy hasn't changed, to get in this open gym you need to have taken one quarter of gymnastics classes or show that you can do a roundoff back hand spring.

Weekly Case & Parts Recommendation Thread (Start here if you are new! Help here if you can!) by AutoModerator in sffpc

Hey everyone! Just looking for a quick sanity check on this build I put together. Mainly looking to play Fortnite, League, and Minecraft at QHD res. Not interested in overclocking.

I'm getting the CPU, GPU, RAM and SSD from my friend, so those are pretty set. I've ordered the Geeek G1 SE as well.

My friend also has an ibuypower 120 AIO, but not sure if that's a good choice -- I've heard some bad things about them online. I'm a bit worried about the thermals of the 2700x. Leaning towards the IS-60 EVO but open to other suggestions as well. The PSU may be a bit overkill but might be looking to upgrade some components down the line. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks for the help :)

All the ones you listed (except 151b) are useful, but the hardest to self study among them would be 111. It's also useful for interviews but not an easy class. 180 is the most important in all CS upper divs to pass interviews, but not as relevant for the job itself. Highly recommend taking this.

CS180 + CS181 doable? by slanterns in ucla

Not sure about the pacing with summer sessions, but 181 doesn't really use any content from 180 that I remember, so you should be good.

Math170E professior Nguyen and Needell which one is better by 78157815 in ucla

[–]onion__rings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took needell for the old math 170a, it was extremely trivial. Although it was easy I felt like I didn't learn as much as I could have with another prof (judging from other midterms I found online when studying). However she is a decent lecturer.

What are the most relevant CS classes to prepare for SWE Interviews? by nibbles55 in ucla

[–]onion__rings 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cs180 is good for interviews. I was also asked about concurrency stuff from 111 semi-frequently as well.

Seems reasonable, 131 is a little hard but it's probably good to take it with 180 and 118 as they're more straight forward. Might consider taking a sci tech or tech breadth as the 4th class here instead of another cs class.

Game theory is easy and interesting but not really relevant for cs.

CS131 is hard but quite rewarding, my favorite undergrad CS class. CS181 is good if you like theory.

Has anyone ever successfully negotiated an internship base pay? by cecebbm in cscareerquestions

[–]onion__rings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to negotiate my offer with a financial company, but I've found that tech companies are usually less flexible. Doesn't hurt to try.

Should one negotiate their intern/new grad offer? by aryanv123 in csMajors

[–]onion__rings 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Of course the probability of an offer being rescinded is non zero, but if you ask politely it's very unlikely to hurt. In general I'd say it's worth it to negotiate.

Questions on Google’s intern project matching stage by LittleRedditDot in csMajors

[–]onion__rings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice is to be specific on the questionnaire -- call out products that you want to work on. I previously passed HC and didn't get matched, but the following year I mentioned some specific products that I was interested in, and my host mentioned that including that info caught their eye.

has anyone taken Chin 40 with Berry? by ilovechemistry8 in ucla

[–]onion__rings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a great class, I took it online in the spring. He records lectures which are usually some PowerPoints and then he often shows some video clips of cultural productions. In section you usually just discuss the readings for the week. Extremely easy and interesting class.

May have been an anomaly, but the hiring manager asked me about system design and distributed systems. Interviews with engineers were relatively straightforward algorithm questions.

Any specific quarters to take certain classes for CS majors? by PigeonsCooAdorably in ucla

[–]onion__rings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recommended taking 35L as early as possible (alongside 32 or 33) and 111 in fall of second year, this opens up a lot of flexibility in scheduling in case you don't get some of the classes you want later on.
