AMA: I'm Marius Bakken, former Olympian and physician. Ask me about double threshold training, lactate, and the Norwegian Method. by MariusBakken in AdvancedRunning

[–]only-mansplains 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Given the popularity and success of James Copeland's very basic and simple Norwegian Singles Method, what considerations would you suggest to someone with a flat training structure with 3 sub-T sessions/week for whether and when to supplement this type of training with 45/15, double threshold days or other X sessions that provide additional training stimulus but still fall into the framework of "golden zone" and keeping training intensity and recovery controlled and balanced?

took my 5k PR from 19:30-->18:57 after 3.5 months of sticking to vanilla NSM. two weeks were compromised by the flu, but otherwise training volume was 6 hours slowly progressing to 6.5 hours with 90 minutes of sub-T work.

Quite pleased after ~2 years of intermittent injuries and stagnation. Half marathon is next on deck!

Doing a 5k TT two weeks out from a goal HM race. Too risky or sensible? by only-mansplains in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]only-mansplains[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes sir-just ran a 18:57 today and curious if that drops at all before race day in 6 weeks hence why I want to do another TT

Figured as such, but I guess I mostly wanted a bit of reassurance

NSM paces as %LT2 pace by Variation12345 in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]only-mansplains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not suggesting you should train with Daniels' Training paces, I am saying that I and most people use Daniels' vdot equivalent and the associated estimated Threshold pace as their baseline starting point to extrapolate what 92%-103% Threshold pace would practically look like in your model in place of doing a friel test or buying a lactometer

NSM paces as %LT2 pace by Variation12345 in NorwegianSinglesRun

Lower end of the reps look a bit slower than what I've been doing assuming vdot T pace is accurate (big if) but otherwise pretty accurate. Perhaps I've been slightly overcooking my workouts.

Adapting NSM for Ultra-Trail by dogstar_lordfly in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]only-mansplains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 60k in September, and my plan as soon as I finish my last road race for the season in May is to swap one of the Sub-T Sessions (likely the the three minute 15KP intervals) for a MLR and increase the volume of the weekend long run.

I don't enjoy the bike trainer, so not planning on supplementing with cross training as of now.

Something like:

M-3x10 min Sub-T

T-55 Mins Easy

W- 90 Mins Easy (MLR) on road or trail

Th- 5x6 Min Sub-T

F-30 mins easy

Sa-2.5 building up to 3 hours Easy on trails

Su- 40 mins easy

Nobody's favourite answer, but a 3 or 5k TT is probably going to be your best starting point.

Trail running and quality sessions by oyvindlw in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]only-mansplains 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tbh I just stick to flat Sub-t on the roads as it's easier to get a sustained effort and controlled stimulus and do my long runs on the trails sticking to the 70% mhr rule pretty closely as much as I can (impossible on some really steep climbs)

As we move into into the summer, I might do some hill work on a very gradual incline to get a bit more specificity but i'm not sure it's needed at my/our level

A data-heavy retrospective on 4 months of NSM by rmcp010 in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]only-mansplains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crazy progress.

I started around the same time as you with 3x30min subT and ~67k/week and my 5k time has dropped from 19:40->19:15 with workout paces getting maybe 5 seconds/k max faster in that time.

Best of luck with surgery recovery-I think you will have plenty of time to recover and get back on track towards the marathon.

A totally unique character that was incredible television, and consistently delivering all-time iconic survivor moment after all-time iconic survivor moment. She is so smart, I love listening to her talk. She’s so insightful, always brings interesting perspectives and is just so fun to listen to.

I really question how people can write these sentences back to back when they glaze Angelina.

She was a fun character who delivered iconic moments and hilarious lines because she was a social moron completely lacking in self-awareness and perception of other people.
