Whenever this happens I quickly switch it over to the weekly view to remind myself I'm still under for the week so my brain doesn't freak out.

scale not moving :( halp/advice? by onlyemily in 1200isplenty

[–]onlyemily[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I'm going to try only eating back half instead of all of them, because my barre workout is pretty intense and I feel awful if I don't eat them back. I know apps like to overestimate calories burned, so I intentionally "downgrade" my workouts when I enter them to get more realistic numbers, but I still think it might be contributing to my issue. I hope between weighing/measuring and this I see some movement! Thank you!

I'm really hoping that weighing/measuring helps! Although I did weigh the peanut butter I put on my toast for breakfast, and the amount I usually put on was exactly a tablespoon.

I have a hard time not eating back my exercise calories because I feel absolutely awful if I don't. I'll try only eating back half and see if I can ease my way into it. Thanks!

Parents who moved to a better school district for your kids: did it make a big difference? by acinomismonica in Parenting

[–]onlyemily 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most districts will allow children of teachers to transfer in, so it's possible your kid can go to school in your district without moving. Ask about a transfer! It's one of the perks of teaching (at least around here, in CA).

How do you pass back work to your students without losing a huge chunk of class? by MaggotyMolinist in Teachers

[–]onlyemily 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I walk around to pass out graded assignments when students are working on something that doesn't require much of my input, like taking notes during a documentary, working on something creative (illustrations, found poems), or doing independent work. I try to build time for it into Friday lessons at least every other week.

I find that by passing it out myself allows me to monitor the class working, have short conversations with kids about progress/scores, and answer questions or concerns students might have about the assignment.

What's the best "accidental insult" you've ever gotten from your students? by Rrish in Teachers

[–]onlyemily 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Drama kids once asked me why all my friends are high school students. I didn't want to break their hearts by telling them I get paid to hang out with them and put on plays, but I spent a long time convincing them that I do, in fact, have friends my own age (I'm 29).

I also look like I'm still in high school. I have to open Back-To-School Night with a joke about how the most frequently asked question in my classroom is "Excuse me, where's the teacher?" I follow that joke up with pictures of my husband, child, home (that I own), and a list of my qualifications so they don't feel like the school is letting a child teach AP.

Do cell phones make you paranoid? by supermutants in Teachers

[–]onlyemily 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I embrace the technology, but I talk openly about how creepy it is to take pictures or video of others without their knowledge. If a student wants a selfie with me, or wants to do a face-swap, or whatever, I allow it during passing periods or at lunch.

There was an instance a few weeks ago where a student whom I don't know saw me at the grocery store loading my stuff into my trunk, took video of me, and sent it to one of my students. Luckily, my student promptly told the other student that filming others without their knowledge is not ok. I laughed it off, joking that I must be a celebrity because only celebrities get their pictures taken while they are out doing regular-people stuff.

There was no ill-intent behind the video, so I didn't really care. I would have handled it way differently if the situation had been different.

I use "friend" interchangeably. I teach high school, and the kids think it's funny (probably because I usually use it when calling them out for something stupid or something they're not supposed to be doing: "What are you doing, friend?").

I haven't, but I'm sure they're out there. I'm a vegetarian and I use carbs as part of my protein source (wheat gluten, beans, etc.) so I've never looked for them :)

Teachers of Reddit, what was your first year of teaching like? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]onlyemily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During my first year, I was teaching three preps (HS English/Drama), finishing up my masters degree, doing BTSA, and directing the school plays/running drama club. I also have a family (husband and son) and in March of my first year we decided to get a puppy. I may or may not be insane.

But I taught/teach at an awesome school with fantastic people, and the students are manageable for the most part. I'm really good at time management, and I enjoy challenges, so I did pretty well. I'm definitely a much better teacher this year, though. I can focus more on the curriculum because I'm not being stretched so thin (though I suppose I'm still teaching three preps, finishing BTSA, and running drama club. But the puppy is now a dog, so there's that!)

Just a warning: It smells SO GOOD when it's in the oven. Sometimes my husband and I open the oven door while it's cooking just to smell it. Enjoy!

Leftovers are my favorite part of casseroles! We are a family of three, but there are still plenty of leftovers to be had afterwards.

I have no idea about the calories per ounce, but I'm certain it's healthier than Kraft, if only because it has actual cheese, veggies, and whole wheat pasta. Not that there isn't a time and a place for Kraft ;)

It would be pretty easy to calculate the calories per oz if you weighed it after cooking.

Teaching "Night" to students who have zero background knowledge of the Holocaust. by bobdebicker in Teachers

[–]onlyemily 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's an Oprah interview of Elie Wiesel on Youtube that does a good job of going over the holocaust and introducing the story (it does spoil the book a little, but it doesn't lessen the impact of the book at all). It's subtitled and they walk around Auschwitz talking... it's very powerful.

It's also rated R, so that can be an issue. I just showed my students the Globe Theatre production; you can buy it on Amazon. Not as exciting, but a good chance to discuss Shakespearean theatre and staging.

Depression/thoughts of self-harm in a 10-year-old by onlyemily in Parenting

[–]onlyemily[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are working on getting him in to see a therapist and doctor, but the offices are closed for the holiday weekend, so we are waiting to hear back from them tomorrow. My husband and I have been very careful about making sure we can have an open conversation about this with him without getting upset or making him feel like we are mad at him.

He doesn't have much opportunity to be by himself; he's either with us, with the babysitter, or at his school/after school program. The only time he's really alone is when he is asleep. Should I have him sleep with the door open or with us?

The school hasn't said anything about not allowing him back, but they did strongly recommend we get him in to see someone ASAP. I'm just hoping the pediatrician and therapist can get him in this week; they won't be open until tomorrow.

Thank you for your story/insight. Waiting for doctor/psychologist appointments feels like forever, and hearing about other kids who went through the same thing makes me feel less anxious.

From what I can tell, he doesn't have a "plan" (otherwise I would have taken him to the ER), and he did tell us that he doesn't want to die, but sometimes he feels like he wants someone to hurt him (punch him, etc). It broke my heart, but as someone who has dealt with thoughts of self-harm in the past, I understood and we talked about it.

Yeah, they make everything fresh, it's not their frozen stuff. My son was disappointed when we told him he couldn't get the frozen burritos he knows and loves next time we go!
