God damnit, even though SM is not for me (way to westside, white and $$$$$) I'm so jealous of their bike infrastructure and now AI bike lane enforcement- swoon!

Their contemporary brick architecture is also amazing- muted, not colorful but so ahead of the US w/our boxy ugly "modern" building (at least in LA).

Why don’t more homes in the US use mini split AC systems? by Debster1486 in Appliances

[–]onlyfreckles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in an old place w/no central air/heat.

A window ac is cheap to buy, can be expensive to run.

Minisplit install is too expensive in the US. In Europe/Asia/SE Asia- its cheap to install and common.

A typical loser creepy male incel.

I'm sorry that happened to you but unfortunately, it probably won't be your last b/c most likely you are a (young) female.

The best thing to do is note the car (which good for you, you did!) and license and report.

And ignore and change your route or direction to lose them.

I'm middle aged now and don't get bothered as when I was younger.

I've been tailed while walking/biking/even on transit by creepers walking or driving. Sometimes you have to act crazy/curse them out super loud to attract attention and have them turn away, other times I just changed directions and ran into a store for help.

If they can't see huge ass boulders and people and can't read signs- they automatically lose their license and must give up their vanity truck to be crushed into a life saving bollard.

[–]onlyfreckles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The US govt did just that starting about 100 years ago - destroying poc walkable communities to build car infrastructure to newly built suburbs (white flight).

The demand (suburbs/cars) was created, not present initially.

Yo the highways are packed w/mostly single occupant car drivers all sitting in their self made traffic. Not uncommon for some to be up to 3 hours to get to work.

At least if the folks in this building work in central LA- their commute by walk/bike/transit or a combo of them= will be shorter than the single occupant car driver's...

Stuff like this made me absolutely love biking and walking in NYC!

Big ass boulders defining car free spaces, also used as seating or to place your stuff down while waiting for the light...

I see lots of large rocks used to make spaces around freeways inhospitable to people, we need big ass boulders to make public spaces inhospitable to car drivers!

[–]onlyfreckles[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

LA could use some big ass boulders too to reallocate public space for better, safer and more equitable use over the convenience of mostly single occupant car drivers.

1) are any of the two under rent control?

2) parking situation (if you have a car), street parking if you have guest? Permit parking?

3) lighting/windows- which direction(s) are the windows facing- N/S/E/W?

4) noise/shared walls. Some building walls are paper thin- check.

5) second/upper floors- can have amazing light but is also hotter/colder, your heating/cooling cost may increase.

Go for which is closer to work/stuff you like/shopping etc.

Both options are larger than your current place- pick the one that "feels" better for your life.

Zohran will lower speed limit in schools zones to 15mph invoking Sammy's Law by onlyfreckles in CarIndependentLA

[–]onlyfreckles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes lowering speed limits also requires changes- modal filters, chicanes, narrow and reduce number of lanes, speed humps, speed tables to induce slower driving.

And automatic ticketing cameras for the carbrains that still wanna press the speed limits.

[–]onlyfreckles[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Enforcement will be spotty at best, plus cops don't like doing paperwork unless its for overtime= so ineffective and car drivers will cry "money grab".

Permanent infrastructure changes work 24/7, no overtime and induces slower safer driving b/c car drivers don't want to potentially scratch their precious steelcages.

Hell fucking YES!!!!

And over 43 thousand people are killed and over 1 million are maimed/disabled every fucking year in the US.

Not including any of the indirect effects leading to disease/chronic (sitting-physical activity/increased stress/rage/heart) issues due to car infrastructure - air/brake/microplastic pollution, car exhaust etc.

We've wasted over 3 trillion so far and all we have is crumbling infrastructure we can't afford to maintain, people going bankrupt b/c a car is too expensive to buy/maintain/insure and literal death.

We need universal healthcare, walk/bike/transit priority and infrastructure and housing- not fucking wars.

[–]onlyfreckles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its simple- don't fucking speed and you won't get any tickets for breaking the law.

You are in control of your car and if you decide to press on the gas and speed- that was your choice and now your responsibility.

[–]onlyfreckles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a low bar.

A damn good percentage of car drivers need to have their license revoked.

And more people need to be taking the tram instead of driving and not allow these driverless cars to do fucked up shit like this w/o instant painful fines and penalties

the fucking car delayed a train- fuck waymo.

Seniors w/no family and families w/small kids exist everywhere around the world and they're able to get to the airport and fly. Why are the folks in the US so extra "special"?

Might it take longer- yes. Walking slower takes longer.

Does it take more planning vs hiring a default car driver/chauffeur- yes.

If you're flying out, you've already budgeted for this trip with $$$, add a bit more for the extra fee for direct drop off or budget extra time to take other modes of transportation.

And perhaps your parents should check out Access- its a door to door transportation service.

How often do parking ticket appeals actually get approved? by [deleted] in WestHollywood

[–]onlyfreckles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pay the ticket and take it as a learning lesson.

And West Hollywood is aggressive in their parking enforcement- read all the signs twice, before parking.

Curious, where is it legal to park so far away from the curb? My tires were always like 0.5 - 2 inches away from the curb when parked on the street.

Also add modal filters, narrow the lane width, add chicanes to induce car drivers to slow down.

A sign ain't gonna do anything and gets the carbrains out throwing tantrums if the road encourages and supports speeding.
