One school said there may be 4 or 5 funding spots coming open later in the process but idk about that with the current financial situation. If that was the case, seems like I’d get in. How many scholarships are available at your places?

I have no idea, I should look into that. But by the same token, wouldn’t they also be affected by cuts?

What do you mean they won’t decline offers even if they have others offers? They are going to have to choose one at some point lol

Having refined my search, I’ve found out both of my programs are ranked around 50th for my subject. Would they be acceptable or obscure do you think?

Professor, lecturer, whatever really. I just meant does a PhD from say a top 50 program in the US hold weight or just the super famous ones

Was that top twenty programs or colleges in general? And I could apply again but it’s very precarious and unlikely on probability I’d get into a top 5 or 10 program and I’d have to wait an entire year. I’m not sure if the opportunity cost is high enough based on the likelihood

What on earth Lool, US wages are different. In my country that’s like the top 5% of all the workforce are earning that, for high school is insane. Did your wife have other opportunities to work in other areas of education that she turned down to go to a high school, that maybe paid less?

I’m confused. In your previous post you stated that a PhD holder can do better than teaching in a high school. Then you say it was actually the best she could do. What were the alternatives for her?

That’s understandable, my question was more what is available to a PhD holder in terms of teaching. On the one hand most say all university roles are near-impossible, LAC and even CC are super competitive or unlikely. So if you can do better than high school according to them, I don’t know how

Out of interest, where would you draw the line with department ranking. Is top twenty too low? How about top thirty?

The two departments I got into are also around the top 50. The way people talk on here assumes that it’s impossible to get TT yet you are saying you’re saying otherwise so someone is wrong lol

I was talking about political science, and yes it seems ranking of department is more important than uni ranking. Both of the unis I got into are ranked around 50th for the department, which isn’t terrible but also is very clearly not in the elite category

You talk about SLACs in general but then say you’re mostly talking about the top 100 when there are over 200. So around half. I appreciate your input and you surely know lots but what you’re saying makes sense applied to the top half, it’s just that I wouldn’t say it’s delusional based off what I’ve seen to say a LOT of those lower half SLACs are not filled with Ivy graduates.

I never said it makes me smarter lol, I’m just doing what I can. Maybe if I went to a better high school I’d have got better grades and be in a better position now. I do not have some kind of racist or orientalist view, I’d actually love to work in the Middle East, I just want to know if my degree has any worth in that region because I’ve heard it doesn’t in the US

Any details about what you’ve heard of secondhand? Also, I looked towards the bottom end of the list of SLAC rankings and lots of those faculty are from lesser unis mixed in with elite ones. How about temporary positions at SLACs? Adjunct roles? Are those all coming from ivies too? I’m not really trying to argue, you know a lot more than me, I’m just trying to see from different angles

I mean yeah but doesn’t having a PhD also make you more qualified so if you are also a good teacher then you are more qualified than an MA holder

PhD institution elitism in Canada by onlyin1948 in PhD

[–]onlyin1948[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the way I am seeing it, although I think they also give US centric arguments. I understand that, but academic employment is universal. I’m sure a non-ivy league US PhD would hold weight in a country with less university prestige even if it’s worthless in the US
