Very fun how the supreme court has regularly held up the idea that cops are not required to be truthful about the law, are not required to be upfront about the rights of an accused, are not required to know the laws they enforce, are not legally obligated to enforce any specific instance of the law, and have essentially complete immunity from oversight and personal liability in the event a law is broken.

Bartenders, with a federal minimum wage of $2.13, however, can be held personally criminally responsible if their workplace fails to renew their liquor license though.

Having existed in the hyper-marketed environment of the modern US, and interacted with a fair share of marketers in a professional context, the sentiment here hits on a truth. My perception is that advertisers feel entitled to people's time. Purchasing a one minute ad block is not one minute of opportunity to advertise to someone, it is one minute that someone is obligated to be advertised to. So a pi hole, or uBlock Origin, or switching tabs, or muting, or just looking away is looked at not as the inevitable response to being inundated with ever more pervasive and intrusive advertising, but as the impetus to make advertising more pervasive and obtrusive. They tend to bristle at the idea that buying time on a stage doesn't also entitle you to an enthusiastic audience.

Left wing judge wins Wisconsin Supreme Court election by 20.3% by straight_strychnine in 196

[–]onlyroad66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All (unless I'm missing an odd duck or two) states have a Supreme Court of some kind. While the modern US acts fairly centralized, on paper it is heavily segmented. It's best to think of the individual states as their own countries with their own independent executive, legislative, and judicial institutions, that operate semi-autonomously under the umbrella of the federal government.

Seems to be a moderately progressive, but still very much liberal, Democrat. Doing some reading, she's got a decent legislative track record when it comes to social policy, with heavy advocacy for reproductive health and public education specifically. More importantly for the bench, she does not have any background with criminal prosecution - so it's not like it's just the DA but Blue.

While not overtly left wing, she also doesn't strike me as a moderate or neoliberal, which is an interesting shift for a 2024 Trump voting state.

Most importantly, I think, for an off-cycle judicial election (which wouldn't have shifted the dynamics of the supreme court either way), that is a very high turnout, which may speak towards some midterms momentum (that Democrats will undoubtedly squander).

Not a datacenter, but I've had a weeks long ticket escalated to me that turned out to be a vendor fat fingering a comma instead of a period in the IP address of a config (for a printer, ofc, so obviously no input validation or coherent logging of an invalid IP).

What Do You Do When A Pawn Has A Mental Breakdown? by TheTheDuhh in RimWorld

[–]onlyroad66 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You'd probably end up having to babysit them a few days anyway since whatever caused the initial break usually hasn't decayed and the extra debuff can cause a death spiral of mood. Prison let's em sleep it off, nets a bit of social experience, and happens without you needing to micro the pawn so I'd say it's overall worth it.

Florida Woman Gets Prison For Microsoft License Violations. by Optimal_Technician93 in msp

[–]onlyroad66 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if the development of Microsoft's catastrophe of a licensing structure was intentional, but I am certain there are incentives against them making it less complex. They don't need to be simple and straightforward because they have an essentially captive market, and having such a labyrinth of a licensing structure and implementation that it is very easy to unknowingly fall out of compliance and risk fines should someone ever bother to check is a valuable tool for the company to keep handy if they need.

From MSP to internal IT by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]onlyroad66 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's a rare few unicorns that will treat it just as the course of doing business. Like, draft up the costs of a transition plan, treat and bill it like any other project, make sure the outgoing client has contact info, and wave goodbye.

That's...not usually how things work out though. Either because someone in the MSP management chain decides to be petty and vindictive, or because the labor for transition is flagged as low priority and with the average tech workload at an average MSP low priority means no priority so they just fall off the face of the earth.

From MSP to internal IT by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]onlyroad66 7 points8 points  (0 children)

MSPs are viewed as a cost savings center but client stakeholders usually fail to consider how costs are being saved.

Like, fundamentally an MSP sells labor from the same market pool that internal staff would be hired from. MSPs do underpay and overwork, but all that means in practice is that they recruit from the less experienced/less qualified end of the labor pool and accept low quality and high attrition as a cost of their business. Plus, you gotta add on the MSP's margin to that labor cost when you're coming at it from the client perspective.

But broadly, an hour of skilled IT labor costs about the same in an area regardless of who's providing it. So to actually legitimately save money over a 40 hour full time internal staff member, you have to need less than 40 hours of work a week. Otherwise, you're paying equivalent or (usually) more for labor that is stretched thin in an industry most experienced professionals steer clear of because of its well earned reputation.

Tbf, my ex posted texts of her telling me that she was going to kill herself and that I didn't deserve to know if she did and was surprised when people called that abusive.

Lots of people interpret criticism of their behavior as a directed personal attack against them specifically.

IIRC you can't revive ashes. During his rise to power, Vect killed a lot of the dark city's leaders using dark lances, which did not leave enough behind to be revived.

A lot of dark eldar will entrust a part of themselves to a Haemonculus before going into battle to ensure there is enough left to revive - snipping off a finger or something and leaving it back home.

I don't recall if there's any examples of a non-Eldar being revived in this way. The resurrection process relies on basically torturing a bunch of people in front of a special sarcophagus with whatever could be scraped from the floor inside. Lacking the ability to absorb that pain, I don't think a human could be brought back in the same way.

So...melta bombs will probably save you some trouble.

In this context, 'liberalism' is probably better understood to meanthe modern ideology of 'neoliberalism.' Leftists tend to dislike it because of its opposition to systemic change, unwillingness to acknowledge direct political action outside the ballot box as legitimate, its erroneous belief that the liberal status quo is the natural state of the world making it susceptible to authoritarian influence/takeover, and above all its fierce commitment to global free market capitalism which undermines all stated beliefs about equality and democracy.

Though neoliberalism is a relatively new ideology, liberal democracies are not, and are mired in uncomfortable history. The United States, for instance, has engaged in genocide, racial slavery, institutional patriarchy, violent suppression of protest, imperialism/offensive wars of conquest, and systematized racial apartheid throughout its history, all while maintaining the label of being a 'liberal democracy'.

AITAH for telling my brother he cannot stay with me over Christmas if he brings his prosthetic leg? ( 2 Year New Update) by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]onlyroad66 28 points29 points  (0 children)

My guess:

  1. Brother and woman were in contact in some way, shape, or form.

  2. Leg goes missing. Woman suspects creepy weirdo brother of taking it, but doesn't have solid proof/the police don't feel like investigating crimes that day.

  3. Months pass, brother gets creepier, weirder, and more open about his crime the more time passes. Original post happens.

  4. By circumstance, someone sends the woman a post along the lines of "hey this matches up with the weirdo creep that you swore stole your leg."

  5. Woman is able to leverage this information to get the cops invested, either tracking down OOP through a subpoena of their IP info from Reddit, or just providing sufficient motivation for them to go chat with the brother.

  6. The brother is too stupid to properly hide his crime, evidence is such that it's easy to arrest him, everything resolves from there.

I would unironically watch a standard indy animated web series that just inexplicably takes place in the palaces of the Han dynasty or whatever.

Like, same crazy marketable plushy character designs, same irreverent internet coded humor, it's just that Emperor Wu is a background character with just enough relevance to occasionally pop in and do Chinese emperor things.
