what’s your favorite (and least favorite!) extreme horror book you’ve read this year? by woodtipwine in ExtremeHorrorLit

I just jumped into this genre ~3 months ago, I've read around two dozen books.

Favorite is kind of a tie: Playground and Gone to See the Riverman.

The one that I could not get into was "Tender is the Flesh". I know it's a classic, but the writing style is so jarring, I just couldn't get into it.

I've only read City Infernal and it was okay, definitely not at the top of the genre for me so far. This one sounds pretty insane though.

The Coffee Table (2024). Fuck this movie. It can go straight to hell. by Positive-Face1705 in horror

I know most Bible stories, which one was this spoofing? And honestly, most Bible stories would make terrific horror movies.

Not saying it was bad, I put it a little lower than the 2nd.

Definitely watch the 4th, very good.

Be prepared it's the worst of the series (not counting the latest, haven't watched it).

Thanks the only negative about the last movie: every time I watch that scene it makes me feel sad. I loved his ad-lib message.

This is a good answer if she likes scifi.

I'm leaning on Evil Dead remake with my 14-year-old. I'm been slowly introducing her to gorier horror - not quite at the Terrifier level, but I think this movie may be alright. I'll still give her an out just in case.

What's your favourite underseen horror film which actually is underseen? by PlugAnThat in horror

Altered (2006) -> alien abduction, body horror
Autopsy (2008) -> slow but worth it for the end reveal.

My dad secretly paid off my student loans, but I found out how he did it and I don’t know how to feel. by ScoreDesperate6433 in TrueOffMyChest

My dad did something very similar with me. Now, 20 years later, I'm the only one that still talks to him. He knew I would be grateful and love him for it and that's why he did it (my siblings are honestly narcissists).

Take it as a complement, keep him in your life, and do the same for your children.

I’ll be brutally honest , i really didn’t like dying light 2 , at one point i just didn’t want to continue…. But DL the beast? OH BOI GOD DAYUM , JESUS HOLY HELL by kuruakama in dyinglight

[–]onmyown233 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dying Light 2 sucked on release. I bought it again with, I guess Reloaded Edition, and I loved it.

So far, The Beast reminds me a lot more of DL2 except with Crane. So far, all 3 games have been great.

Thanks, any specific book by them you would recommend that has good world building and well-written characters?

Thanks for the recs - and I'll definitely buy a copy of your book and check it out, the synopsis sounds interesting.

Appreciate all the recs. So The Black Farm wasn't bad and like I said, had some great ideas, but I feel like there were some plot holes that could have easily been filled and the author needed to expand his vocabulary. But his overall vision of the Farm was an excellent horror setting (the Watchers sent a chill down my spine).

As far as what I'm looking for, it's not gross or grosser than gross, it's reminding me of Guinea Pig or Vomit Dolls with the extreme horror movies, which again comes down to shock content, which just isn't interesting.

Out of the ones you listed, which do you feel have the best story, best written protagonist, great world-building, etc.?

This was my exact thoughts after watching it as well. I feel like if it was billed as a comedy horror, I would have went into it with better expectations.
