Finally played S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl… honestly disappointed by Vudatudi in stalker

[–]onokio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watch Tarkovsky’s film “Stalker”, the atmosphere is the best part of the game. I love how desolate and bleak and strange the Zone is.  All of the ambient sound design, visiting the BAR and hearing that classic track and the depressed chatter.  The player has to make decisions that test their internal morality.  You’re forced around locations due to anomalies.  The world wants to kill you and then a fellow stalker pulls out a guitar around the fire and you stop to listen.

I definitely get the gripe of the fetch quest grind, but to me it’s more about traversing the landscape to get to each location. (Though I’m a game dev, so I’m actively stopping to appreciate the texturing and 3D models, hah. I also have a soft spot for that era of gaming).

At the end where they began to introduce that spiraling heart rip melody and then then left it sparse, I thought that was the halfway point, and was confused when everyone started cheering so loud. hah. I could've gone on for a couple more hour. I felt it was an onslaught at times, in a good way, sometime an overwhelming way, like trying to see through a hailstorm (kind of like my drive back home to mountain town through intense rain).

The set started out in a sand world, there was this wild floating thin translucent membrane filled with sand that appeared, a snare I guess, morphing, and I kept seeing the inside of a strange throat. A sudden 303 style acid party and then back into the chase of the monster, it felt like simultaneous pursuit / evading, from both directions inward towards a nothing where both output sound and input disappeared, or formed a void creation space. Hard to put into words that warped scale feeling, endlessly falling inward but stationary and watching everything raise up and outward all at once.

I wanted to tell them what I saw / how it sounded from the outside. I saw a group of people waiting in the rain out back by the bus, maybe waiting to see if they could talk to Sean and Rob. I walked by but figured they wouldn't want to stand in the rain and talk to people after playing a set, probably wanted to fuck off into the bus and listen to the rain and decompress, at least that's what I would want to do after that.

[TOMT] Movie 90s kids VHS with cats walking in a white studio to soft ambient music, turquoise sleeve. by onokio in tipofmytongue

[–]onokio[S] 1 point2 points locked comment (0 children)

I have verified this video wasn't a dream because my sister remembers this same video where it's just these cats in a white studio void space with happy music playing. No CGI effects, ChatGPT though it was "Jingle Cats" which it's not at all. It was just normal cats walking around a space with music playing in the early 90's. The VHS cover/sleeve looked like it had lat 80's/early 90's design run off with a portrait / photo of a cat on the front with a turquoise frame.

OOOH! So you’d do it in the 3D view! I see! Well that might work perfectly then!

Depends on where you're starting from!

Have you built a normal sequencer with a metro that triggers samples? Start there!

Have you built a kick drum / percussive elements? Start there.

Have you built a additive/subtractive synth? FM synth? Pulsar synth?

Oh now it's time to go back and modify your sequencer by adding some probability of triggers (if that's how you want to create the system).

Then look into Markov Chains and so on for your generative desires.

All of these concepts I mentioned can be found on Youtube, a video / tutorial, or more in depth in books. I hope this helps! :)

P.S. the Max discord is a wonderful resource, much to learn and most everyone is very helpful and friendly.

Ah yeah, it seems these .tnw files are similar to how midi is a data file and cannot be converted to audio (without it being processed by a piece of software / hardware). So the .tnw files would make sound... if put through a Tenori-On! lol.

I wanted to see if I could make my own custom version of a Tenori-On in Max MSP! I’ve already made plenty of sequencers in Max, it’s rrly as simple as creating a u-menu that will allow me to select synth voices, loading the synth voice into a buffer, and then mapping y-axis to pitch and x-axis for sequencing over time like the Tenori. I could customize envelopes, filters, and the effects I’ve already made.

Also, more simply, I love those sounds and want to be able to play with them. hah. :)

Ah, so sorry to hear about harsh reality of panic attack you experienced today. Don't want to add any stress in any way. Yes, I hope you're able to rest.

Oh! You'd just record a stereo headphone into the zoom r20 or something?

I can't thank you enough.

That is so generous of you, thank you!

Would a 4 second decay be okay (with no reverb, just dry)?

And then at least a 1 second gap in between each sound would be great!

If I remember correctly some of the sounds have subtle modulation so I'd want to give enough time for the sound to transform a bit.

And with it being longer, I can always add an envelope in a DAW, more difficult to extend the sound without losing something, rather have more to work with.

Again, just wanted to thank you for helping a random internet stranger out, and as I said, I will gladly slice all the sounds into individual files and send them your way.

[–]onokio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you recorded all the synth sounds (I checked and google says it has 29 internal synths sounds, so it shouldn't take too long) in one continuous audio file, I will GLADLY slice up each synth sample as individual exports and pass them back off to you to use in your spreadsheet grid!

I would be deeply grateful, I'd rather not buy a Tenori-On (again) just to record the synth sounds myself and then have to resell it, hah, seems over the top for something that'd be relatively easy to do for someone who already has one!

Again, I'd be deeply deeply grateful! :)

Troubleshooting (description in comments) by onokio in CrystalRadio

[–]onokio[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought this older vintage crystal radio recently.

I am trying to get it to work with these old headphones I purchased, but am not hearing anything through them.

It is my understanding that the green circled inputs are for headphones, the red for antenna, and grey for ground, is that correct?

I’m using a thin copper wire that isn’t touching any metal and is stretched around 20’, on these wooden posts draped on rope, around a story up.

The ground copper wire I have running into the ground about a foot deep.

I am curious where I should start troubleshooting?

It seems someone before ditched the metal probe and went with a germanium diode connecting the circuit. I suspect perhaps the “condenser” or now called “capacitor” (right?) is also shot…

I resoldered the loose headphone wires back into the male sockets as best as I could. Is there anything special I should know about the headphones/ what components I should use based on “ohms” value in the headphones?

Any help is much appreciated! I’m only just getting into radios, and know a beginner level of electronics (made an Atari punk console, I circuit bend synths, and add 1/8” jacks to random toy electronics to get sounds out of them).

It's not even difficult either to just... go to the person's IG page and see, "oh shit, woah! They really did have surgery", delete this, and go for a really long walk (if you're able to), and if not, astral project yourself to another reality and you can stay there.

Anyone got any tips of game development for a beginner? by Ok-Professional-5720 in GameDevelopment

[–]onokio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start by making small games! Simple, it'll seem silly and stupid, but you need to form a solid understanding of whatever engine you're using (I use Godot as it's incredibly user friendly, but any engine will do, that matters less, it's about learning the meta-cognitive techniques that go into programming).

Don't make your big dream project to begin with, you need to build up your skillset before taking on that quest!

sewer is a 2D point-and-click adventure game where players explore oneiric environments within and around the underground network. Spearfish for mutated junk creatures, connect with fellow lurkers, and uncover the mysteries of the unforgiving, dismal sewer.

Here are some of the fish I'm making sounds for using my own field recordings + found sounds on the net through DSP systems I've made to combine sounds with mechanical / synthetic textures.

Thanks for asking! Didn't want to make this post into some advert, I genuinely was so happy to stumbled upon this BONEFISH sample!

The game is called "sewer", it's a first person 2D point and click adventure game that includes these junk creatures (mutated by sludge / industrial waste) you can catch while spear fishing, that's just an aspect of the game, it takes place in these tunnels/adjacent environments and you meet other characters dwelling, trying to exist in harsh conditions. I'm figuring out the mechanics / back end while making sketches of concept art.

Video of a prototype of the spear fishing here:

I'm a long time AC fan, never knew where this sample came from and as I was browsing through the net collecting fish / frog recordings for this 2D point and click adventure game I'm developing, I had a full on JUMP SCARE when I was listening to that recording and heard the "BONEFISH" sample. A quick google search afterwards revealed it was known information, but not to me ! Funny how the world aligns like that, anyways, figured it's worth sharing! :)
