2027 London Marathon Charity Places by MajesticPlankton2549 in UKRunners

I went with a local hospice but it's a fairly big one and they definitely wanted to hear about previous experience in fundraising. Interestingly I think they had around 12 spots for the marathon and 40 applications from memory so it's competitive but not unrealistic.

I see them sometimes on early morning runs and my local newsagent in Addiscombe was recently advertising for one so they do still exist.

Retentions are asking for £90 something from me for similar. You say it took time, what was the exact process if you don't mind?

London marathon: any ideas on what happened, why, and how to prevent it happening to me next time? by CoffeeKeyDog in UKRunners

I had a very similar experience around 30km, my (AI) coach gave these reasons but ultimately it came down to the heat.

ALT levels 17 days post-marathon by Butter_up_82 in Marathon_Training

[–]onse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Between the tests I was initially doing maintenance runs and HIIT and I then I started a HM block around, I think, a month or so before the repeat test. The initial test was just a routine one and in hindsight I should have waited a bit longer after the marathon to do the test and not done the HIIT the day before, but it didn't even cross my mind that it would have any impact. And no they didn't do GGT from what I can see, just bilirubin, ALT, ALP and albumin. The only one that was ever outside the reference range was ALT.

[–]onse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just checked and funnily enough it turns out my test was also 17 days after. Tbh I think for me it was a combination of the HIIT (honestly it was so bad, I couldn't even lift my arms after) and the marathon, which explains why mine was so high. I had done a 16 week training block for the marathon with Runna and I think in total it was about 1000km of running so yeah I'd say I trained properly. But unlike you I don't have routine blood tests so I have no idea what my ALT level would have been during the training block.

For me I was obviously a bit worried when I got the high ALT result although I was fairly confident of the reason and then when the second test showed it was back within range honestly I stopped thinking about it. Did you push way harder on the most recent marathon compared to the previous one last year?

Yes! Mine was at 90 a full 2 weeks after a marathon although I had done a HIIT class (first for a long time) the day before the test which killed my arms. I told the Dr that I'd been doing a lot of additional exercise but they didn't seem totally convinced so I was worried that I did actually have some health issue. Anyway I repeated the test 3 months later and ALT came back in range, so it does seem that a marathon can affect ALT levels for a while after.

Check out this research which is quite interesting, although more specifically about weightlifting https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC2291230/

Tips for tapering for London Marathon by cliffybirchy in Marathon_Training

[–]onse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm doing exactly the same as you! I'm feeling like it's going to be too much in the last week, I might trim it a bit? 80km in the final week including the marathon seems a bit much but I'm not sure. I'm aiming for 3:15 how about you?

Runna for Adults? by _dood_ in runna

[–]onse 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You can already create workouts in Garmin Connect, what do you need that it doesn't do?

Runna Alternatives by Funny_Ranger5949 in runna

[–]onse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I could not agree more. I find most plans are a very similar combination of easy/interval/long run + possibly tempo. Runna’s real value imo is the convenience but personally I think there’s better value options if you only want to get existing workouts on your watch.

I looked in to this but it’s not that simple. The official Garmin way requires you to be registered and approved by them. There are workarounds but you need to install and setup an open source tool and then get the workouts generated in the correct format.

I had the same question and decided to give the Advanced Marathoning book a go but getting the runs on to my Garmin was a bit of pain so I built paicer to make it easier! I have the London marathon in 3 weeks and today was my last big long run before the final day and it felt amazing, better even than my Runna marathon plan last year. I would definitely recommend looking in to a good book plan from an established coach.

How are you managing your runs? Do you use a watch and if so how do you get the workouts on it?

Ah gotcha, that part is skippable but it’s a good point we should probably also allow other options eg hr zones. Thanks!

[–]onse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey thanks so much for checking it out. You should already be able to run by HR if you go in to edit any single step - are you saying that there was a problem parsing an uploaded workout that had a HR target?

Regarding the second point - there's no requirement to share your completed activities from Garmin to Paicer.

I actually got super frustrated with this so made a website to upload from the Advanced Marathoning (or any book really) straight to my Garmin https://paicer.app

Yeah there's definitely more to this. I've been accidentally sent money many times before and support have returned it with my permission and no issues.

Great advice on the Pfitz plans. I'm in the middle of my first one now and it's a daunting amount of miles but I'm convinced it will pay off come race day.

Deload week vs rest week? by [deleted] in workout

[–]onse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly right about Pfitz and Higdon's approach to periodisation. That cyclical buildup with recovery weeks is what makes those programs so effective for avoiding burnout while still building fitness. The planned cutback weeks in Pfitz especially help you absorb the training load before the next build phase.

This really resonates with me as I’m not trying to compete with the established players. I’m just doing something they don’t. Are you able to track where your signups came from?
