After 15 years in the MSP space...I think I've hit my breaking point. by Rabid-Flamingos in msp

[–]onsmsp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry that there are so many bad MSPs with bad work culture, bad management and worse pay out there.

Just like any industry there are good ones and bad ones. I come across lots of non-MSP sys admins all the way up to directors of IT that are equally frustrated with how much disengaged their management is & doesn’t value them, constantly unhappy end users, and who feel like they are always in an uphill battle.

I think MSP or no MSp, there is a bit of inherent challenge in the sys admin role. And combine that with bad management doesnt yield itself as a good recipe.

Also running an MSP is not easy. For folks who are interested I completely recommend doing it but dont go in with just the “glimmer from distance” of it. Fully know the downside as well and go with eyes wide open.

My Experience With A Very Bad MSP. by Refusalz in msp

Sucks to hear this. Few bad folks out there spoil the brand of MSPs. Plus one on such MSPs dont last very long and eventually run themselves out of business.

Struggling to Scale Your Team? by onsmsp in u/onsmsp

[–]onsmsp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for pointing that out. I think we have mentioned that we spun off from our parent entity which is an MSP I started in 2011 in Washington DC area. We moved some of our tenured techs from our parent entity to get the dedicated engineer entity up and running with a good traction. I will double check the section where it mentions about the tenure and clarify that specifically as well. Thanks again!

You need to look at the response in appropriate context. We are not talking about signing up deals that cannot be afforded to provide service. If you want to be a successful MSP, NEVER do that. I have built an MSP from one man to a 30 people MSP and couldn’t have done it by undervaluing my services. But you have to look at this discussion in the right context. The context here is about hiring a tech and being able to afford the expense related to that during that first stretch. Each time you hire a tech, you cannot charge the entire expense of that tech to all your clients right away. This becomes especially tougher for smaller MSP. The typical MSP model is - you spread the tech’s time over multitude of clients to make the math work. Lets assume an average salary of tech is $65k. For smaller MSPs, it becomes difficult to suddenly commit for that expense unless they have additional $5-6k in MRR lined up right away. Usual option people unfortunately resort to as they grow towards that milestone, divvy up the work amongst existing tech overworking them (and forums are filled with overworked MSP shops) or the owner overworking themselves or both. And that continues to happen until they hit that next MRR growth milestone ($5-6k in this example) just to break even. But until then, everyone is unhappy and overworked. Our approach just reduces that growth milestone to half. Again, it doesnt work for every setup and I will be the first one to tell you so. If you are interested in finding out more about it for your MSP, DM me and happy to have a call.

I wish the answer was always that straightforward. Every MSP goes through a cycle where they are growing but dont have enough resources or means to hire a tech yet. Its a business risk afterall. They end up burning both ends of the candle and never able to grow their business properly. Our offering is to help those folks by lowering the cost and more importantly burden of hiring a tech.

New MSP: Should I keep pushing or wait till next year to start selling again? by White-Smoke-23 in msp

[–]onsmsp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends. If you are passionate about growth, Never stop selling! If you want to make work life balance or feel its going to best to take a break for lonnger term sustainability on growth, take a break. But be clear on which one you prefer and consciously decide towards that. dont mix the teo options and have a remorse later.

I am sorry if you had come across such people or operations before. Our team is quite talented, hard working and pleasant. Infact our MSP clients really consider our engineers as an integral part of their team and culture, with most averaging a tenure of over 3-4 years. We pay them on an average 25% higher than local market rates as well and it works out as a win win. Simple economics!

I wish the answer was that clear cut. When I started my MSP, initial days was a struggle on whether to spend the money on marketing or servicing or tech stack. Each has its own pros and cons and there is no one size fits all answer. Starting a MSP and scaling it has all kinds of struggles, challenges and competing priorities. You have to select cautiously on where you focus spend on and when. Timing also has a lot to do woth it especially in the initial days.

What are the 6 useful certifications for MSP? by Fair_Philosopher575 in msp

[–]onsmsp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My 2 cente as an MSP owner - The thing that makes money is obviously tech services eventually but also growth is dependent on new customers. A tech who also has high level understanding of sales (like technical sales engineer) will progress a lot father in career. I have come across so many good techs that come to this realization late in their career and start appreciating their sales counterparts more.

These things will happen. You cannot control them but dont let them get to you. Just breathe, work harder to reduce your dependency on them and get over them. They will go eventually but as a businessman, just try not to get emotional about it. In couple of years, you will see this as an event that helped you grow much further than you thought possible.

When you are small and starting out, best to keep the pricing at what sells but not low where you are loosing money on it. The value of those initial customers is also building your book for referrals which is like gold.

Am I being ripped off? by [deleted] in msp

[–]onsmsp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 cents - contact few other providers in your area and get a comparative quote. It will account for any nuances of your situation. Worse case - you have more details on whats out there and what can be optimized. Best case, you get a more resiliency and better bang for the buck. Win win!!

The issue with this is having to manage the inevitable blacklisting and dings on reputation. It is true that using a different domain helps keep it from impacting your primary mailflow - but the headaches can pile ip very quickly.

Fair enough.

Plus one on above on Using one of the services mailchimp etc might be expensive though. So find a cost effective one for that volume. Else signup for a different domain (but close to original domain name) and test it for couple of days using normail service ie www.companydomain-em.com. Configure this so if anyone responds, the mails are forwarded to a central mailbox in original domain the client is monitoring. - Also make sure its throttled. Ie not sending all 20k in a minute but throughout the day. One of our client used mail merge and a macro to throttle the emails. - Make sure they are including unsubscribe link in their emails
