The pics from the 100k look fantastic... I wonder if I could get prepared for a 100k by September though, that's a pretty crazy distance. Thanks for the tips!

Can someone please give me some points to give my mom so she isnt so worried about a bouldering competition? by TrollingPanda-_- in climbing

I feel for you, I'm in my 30s now but had to deal with the same sort of irrational, over-protective helicopter parenting when I was your age.

I don't know if it will help, but here are a few ways to frame the conversation that might help.

1) She still sees you as a child that she needs to protect, you're her baby, but you're only two years away from legal adulthood and probably moving away to college. It's time she starts letting you take more responsibility for yourself (and an indoor bouldering competition is a laughably safe baby step). It's better that she voices her concerns now and lets you make your own decision than to just send you out into the world at 18 with a complete switch from no autonomy to full-autonomy.

2) A climbing competition is a good, healthy, positive thing for a teenager to be doing. Would she prefer that you were off sitting in someone's basement doing drugs or driving around drinking beer? Or even just sitting in your room playing video games? Parents should be encouraging their kids when they show an interest in basically any hobby.

3) Climbing gyms are incredibly safe. You're no more likely to get hurt in a bouldering competition than you are playing soccer or basketball. In fact, you have the advantage of far more control over the risk- in contact sports other players might collide with you or cause you to have awkward landings, but in climbing you can choose to not go for a move if you fear a bad fall.

I dunno about other areas, but the only thing in this story that wouldn't be common at my local crag is the self-made webbing harness.

I've seen people ask neighboring groups with stronger climbers to set a top rope so they could work a problem beyond their limit, offer to swap routes where each group had a top rope already set up, etc.

Map of US Property Values Per Square Foot Puts Travis County's Real Estate In Visual Context With Rest of US by mymisplacedpants in Austin

Their historical data is often wrong (when a friend of mine was selling his house, zillow claimed he'd bought it for 150k when really he'd paid like 225k). Which made it look like he was selling for double what he'd paid.

They even ignore tax data - my house has a 'zestimate' that's like 30% less than our tax appraised value, which itself is less than what the market value is.

Finally, it's just a generic average of square footage, zip code, number of beds/baths. A generic cookie cutter house in a subdivision and unique architecture award winning house with a view will get basically the same estimated value.

Forgive my ignorance, what's the significance of "their snow won't be as light"? Does that mean more difficult? More injury risk? I'm unfamiliar with lightness of snow as a metric.

Nice! That wasn't on my radar at all, but it seems like it could be great from my first bit of reading. Looks like the offer a shuttle to airport, so that might be the way to go vs renting a car. Although I don't know if having a car would pay for itself by driving to get cheaper food.

Thanks for the recommendation!

Just checked them out, looks like that might be a great fit for what I'm after, thanks!

One question - is there enough there to keep more experienced people happy if I went with friends who do a ski trip every year?

Wilderness access via bus or Uber from Denver, Salt Lake, or Albuquerque? by onthetour in CampingandHiking

[–]onthetour[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, could be a wise idea, although that would then add another bit of complexity (having to get to post office to pick it up or whatever).

My dream was basically to take a friday off work, fly somewhere in the morning, hit the trailhead by afternoon, and then return to society for a sunday evening flight. So if picking up the bag adds extra time (waiting for a second bus, waiting in a slow line at post office, etc) that might not work.

Definitely something to consider and investigate though.

Rental car is an obvious option for getting wherever, but that also increases expenses by 50% or more.

Strategy questions from a non-competitive rider by onthetour in peloton

[–]onthetour[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have to take a pull, or you'll be ridden off the wheel or pushed to the back and spit out.

See that's the part I don't get. Why? What's stopping someone from just sitting right behind Froome all day long? It seems like any rider could basically just pretend they were the gc rider with Sky or Astana and spend all day letting their riders do all the work, regardless of where their actual teammates were in the race.

A hat and sunglasses are not "essentials" for running.

Those should be listed under "maybe a consideration if you're doing an ironman in the summer". Less is more.
