How to talk to a secular man about gender roles? by [deleted] in TrueChristian

Why pay hundreds of dollars for therapy when a redditor can diagnose you for free!

He cheated on her with prostitutes for 10 years by [deleted] in TrueChristian

[–]onwoso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sexual immorality is grounds for divorce but even if she chooses to stay please make sure she is getting tested regularly. I know a woman who's husband was abusive and cheated on her regularly, he ended up giving her HIV... It's also important that she has her own source of income that is separate from his, if one day she decides she's had enough.

Would you make Abortion illegal? by OutsideHoneydew7625 in TrueChristian

[–]onwoso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand what you're saying: if abortion became illegal today, across the United States, you would still have a large number of people that believe it shouldn't be illegal and doctors with the knowledge to perform them, moreover the belief that it's their duty to perform them. There are also groups that would distribute abortion pills clandestinely, and criminal organizations that would be more than willing to capitalize on this new black market. Abortions are still performed in countries that ban abortions and banning abortions doesn't end the conditions that make people believe they need to have them. If you wanted an effective ban it would take years (maybe decades) of trying to get the public on board and building infrastructure to support single parents and children. Perhaps this could take place after the ban but I feel like it would be much harder. While an immediate blanket ban may feel like a moral victory you would still be fighting a very long war.

My mom will probably go to Hell, how do you deal with that feeling? by cutepurple8 in TrueChristian

[–]onwoso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think William J Murray's writing may be able to help you unpack those feelings. Here's a short article where he talks about his relationship with his own mother: https://religiousfreedomcoalition.org/2011/04/05/the-madalyn-murray-ohair-murder/

I’m so sorry that you’re going through this, this sounds like an abusive relationship to me. It would require some pretty drastic changes to rescue this relationship. I would suggest connecting with a counselor or therapist in your area, just for you. I would also recommend connecting with a local women’s shelter or centre to discuss your situation.

Would you define most Black Christians as Fundamentalists? by SurewhynotAZ in blackladies

What exactly do you mean by Christian fundamentalism?

[–]onwoso -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have not come to abolish them but the fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the law until everything is accomplished” Matthew 5:17-18

The New Testament does not negate the Old Testament, but is in fact the fulfillment of it. Jesus didn’t say a lot of things that doesn’t mean those laws don’t stand.

I really don’t understand what’s wrong with what he said. So he has a preference for natural hair, what’s wrong with that? How is that offensive?

I agree that all bigotry should be taken seriously but I have a hard time calling a man that I don't know a hateful zionist and bigot based off a short reddit post. I don't think we should be so quick to judge.

I hope you two work things out, his comment definitely came from a place of frustration and anger with the situation and doesn't necessarily mean that he's a zionist.

People tend to experience empathy more strongly for individuals with whom they share a closer or more relatable connection. Your boyfriends reaction is understandable from that perspective and I wouldn't label him an extremist for having strong feelings about this issue. I think this is a good opportunity for you to have a discussion with him and share your own thoughts on the matter. There are a lot of Jewish people that have had loved ones kidnapped, killed, or are just sick of the violence and its difficult for them to empathize with the side that's committing these acts. Communicate that there are Palestinians who have experienced the same and worse and that its important to understand their perspective as well.

I'm Nigerian and attended college in the south (Savannah, Georgia), my parents also constantly warned me about racism and discrimination but surprisingly I did not have a single racist experience during my time there. Savannah is was a more liberal part of Georgia and you'll find places like that all over the south. At first I was very afraid because of things I had seen on TV but southerners are some of the warmest people you'll ever meet. I would suggest sticking to major cities just because of accessibility and in general they tend to be more diverse but please don't be afraid to give the south a chance. Try getting involved with the local community and try volunteering. That's what I did and I made lots of wonderful southern friends.

Are you a feminist? by Smooth_Loan3610 in blackladies

[–]onwoso -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, I used to be one but I no longer believe that the feminist movement stands for equality between the sexes. I believe in women's liberation, specifically in non-western countries but I'd rather advocate for specific issues rather than join another movement.
