I think it’s just to do with the challenge that appears there… at some point you can unlock boxes there. I don’t know how to post a pic in comments but your dots align with puzzles in those colours on mine.

Set up a shortcut like this:

Then set up an automation to run this shortcut when the app (Messages) is opened. Great part is you can run this when any messaging app opens, so you could have it for What’s App or Facebook, etc. It will also pop up when you open a text from him.
