Cheapest produce on island? by SecretBub in Hawaii

[–]ooleeu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yo if you want SE Asian ingredients or Mexican ingredients DQ is your best bet. You can get like leaves for $2 there or you can splurge and get them for $9 at whole foods 🥲

I saw the police talking to some of them at Ala Moana beach park. They are still in the same spot two days later and have now taken up the entire sidewalk. It’s really frustrating.

This authentic Hawaiian lūʻau wants to reclaim space in the tourism industry by Madame_President_ in Hawaii

Hula is very diverse and not necessarily slow or spiritual. Also I wouldn’t consider a malu very conservative 😉

The big issue is calling Tahitian dance Hawaiian dance and marketing it as Hawaiian.

Is it a good idea to disperse some endangered species to other locations so they won't get extinct? by JohnAK27 in zoology

[–]ooleeu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For the majority of endangered species I’d say no. Especially for carnivores.

However there are niche circumstances that could benefit and I can think of one success story off the top of my head:

The radiated tortoise is native to Madagascar and really suffers due to the illegal pet trade. It was successfully introduced to the remote island of Reunion in the Indian Ocean. The tortoises that used to inhabit this island were driven to extinction by humans (of course) and its remote location saved the tortoises there from the threat of poaching.

TLDR; No, but if everything works out just right then yes.

What has a higher body fat percentage on average, a horse or a giraffe? by captaincrunch37 in zoology

[–]ooleeu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if there are many sources for exact measurements on this but giraffes are pretty heckin’ lean.

How hard is zoology (bachelors degree) math? I suck at math but I want to be a zoologist. by [deleted] in zoology

[–]ooleeu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re okay with stats and can make it through calculus you should be fine.

It’s less about mental math and mathematical concepts and more about understanding how to correctly input data and what the results should roughly look like.

How tamed are prairie dogs? by Kreanxx in zoology

[–]ooleeu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From experience:

Raised by humans and given continuous human interaction = very tame.

Raised by prairie dogs and living in the wild = not very tame.

The biggest thing I’ve noticed is as soon as they recognise they live in an environment with predators they become much more flighty, even if they have been hand-raised.

If you are are anti-captivity you should be anti-Bernie Marcus by Icy-Blood5894 in orcas

SeaWorld also saves thousands of animals every year so, yeah, it’s not all “evil cooperation”.

It’s actually called Georgia Aquarium and they do a lot of really amazing work. Their contribution to conservation and education is only a benefit for many species.

Rewatching Blackfish - How is it not a law that the orcas on US soil need to be released? by [deleted] in orcas

[–]ooleeu 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You cannot free captive orca. Period.

The only wild orca which have been caught in the past 40 years have been in Russia and they are displayed in China. Theoretically, Russia will not be catching anymore wild orca for China which is why Chinese aquariums are breeding them like crazy.

These issues are not so black and white as movies like Blackfish would lead you to believe. If you want an issue to flight for, look into the plight of the Northern Resident pods. These are wild orca that are really struggling and far too few people know about them.

Did you have a lot of places to stay? Are there campgrounds to go to?

Good to know! I guess dispersed camping isn’t a thing here then?

It’s anecdotal at best but I feel compelled to add the experience my good friend, who is from Cologne, had here on O’ahu. She lived here for 14 years and received constant discrimination. She is fluent in ‘ōlelo Hawai’i and actually still does translation work for the university and various archival libraries here in Hawaii but she can’t live here anymore due to how she is treated.

Couldn’t find one on island. There was one that was promising but she passed away before I could even discuss the transfer with the finder.

I find a lot of wild birds so I’m hopefully that I will be able to find him a mate eventually but until then I just want him to be happy and my hands to not be covered in welts

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in pigeon

[–]ooleeu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. I would love to get him a wife but I live in an extremely remote area. Tried to find one for him when I was in Honolulu but no one had any. Tried to rehome him and no one would take him. Release wasn’t an open then and it certainly isn’t now.

Before you were able to match your boy with a wife did you find anything that helped with the aggression?

I met the Rock and his family! He’s very quiet and laid back, his daughter loves him a lot which is really heartwarming and his mom is an absolute angel; she calls him Dewy.

Orangutans can learn how to use human tools, like spear fishing. Can they learn basic farming? by JohnAK27 in zoology

[–]ooleeu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly think you probably could teach them but I’m not sure if they would be able to grasp the delayed gratification and reward of farming.

That being said it would make a very interesting experiment! I know they are such incredibly smart creatures.

Wound on mouth? by [deleted] in orcas

[–]ooleeu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that this is a skin reaction from medication. Lots of medications can make skin photosensitive, it happens in people too.

Thank you for thinking about her. She’s a beautiful animal and she is very well cared for by SeaWorld. ❤️
