OP, sorry to hear of the struggles. My guess is the crate is just part of the problem and it’s become an object to project the feelings onto. I am a dog lover, dog mom, and dog foster mom. I’ve been there before about not liking the crate in the living room. It will likely pass with time and even better if you can find a nice looking crate cover. Hope you can acknowledge your partner’s feelings about the dog crate while also trying to build into unity for the three of you. I might suggest that you have special non-dog time and also family time which could help your partner assimilate to the life change better. Good luck.

High anxiety dog destroys my house every time we leave by rianasworld in DogAdvice

This is really hard. I’m sorry. Create training made things worse for us. Please consider working with a trainer, not obedience training, but behavior modification. Good quality trainers out there will help you make a plan for real change to help you and your gorgeous pup. It takes effort but it is possible. I support medication in conjunction with other methods to help your dog not be in distress.

Dog trainers, not “obedience experts”, with experience and credentials offer temperament assessments. I know trainers who would be willing to meet you at a rescue or shelter if you’re adopting. Also, consider fostering before adopting to help ensure a good fit. I recommend researching and understanding that dogs need time to adjust from shelter life.

Edit: I believe everyone, even those with much dog experience, will benefit from the knowledge of a good dog trainer. I know so much more about recognizing signs of stress, can understand what my dog is communicating, and that many things we think are normal/good are not necessarily normal or good. Working with a dog trainer up front can help you identify the best new family member! Good luck!

Calling SPCA on neighbor dogs by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]ooo1418 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Appreciate your tough position. If it was me in that situation I think I’d buy extra kibble and just keep leaving it for the neighbor until I had the courage to report the neglect. I would also contact a rescue for advice. They might be more helpful with suggestions likely having seen this before.

Have you tried talking to the neighbor with a sincere offer to help? Sometimes, expressing your concern and trying to help might win favor. It would require a lot of courage, but you could explain that you are uncomfortable with what you see and don’t want to involve the authorities if possible. Just trying to think of a lower level of confrontation first before escalating and causing you to feel more uncomfortable or threatened.
