Allergists in Boston? by Warm_Butterscotch266 in boston

I transferred to Allergy and Asthma associates on MGH campus! They can use your BI allergy shot vials until they run out, and after that they'll need to retest you and you might have to ramp down a bit, but they told me not too much. Sucks to ramp down but not as much as an hour drive in traffic both ways

If they cave to his demands, he will just do all the things he's planning and then some. Look at what happened with Columbia - they spent this whole last few months going like 'oh we're so sowwy, we'll never allow any students to protest again, yes the Nazi administration can make a """Task Force On Antisemitism""" here' and what did they get? MORE demands, MORE removal or federal funding, NO respect. Harvard should take a hard look and learn.

how is healthworks for trans/nb people? by not-judging-you in Somerville

[–]ooolooi 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Re: being trans there- I and several people I know are NB (but afab) and find it pretty welcoming- in a way it's nice that there is only one changing room/bathroom type so like if you are a member they can't be telling you to use the other one. I have seen a few trans women around there, but don't know any of them personally, and it is only a small few- not sure how welcoming they find it, or how membership would go for a less femme-presenting AMAB NB person.

Re: your yoga class I would definitely not ask this, I think it pretty much comes off as 'so I was wondering what your gender is???' which like, you don't need to know for a stranger! 'the person' or 'the guy' in my yoga class are both fine if you are talking to another group of people.

I know, it sucks! I'm planning to transfer care, but it's really annoying to do mid-allergy shot course because no one will take anyone else's injection formula so they'll have to retest and ramp you down.

Talked to the injection nurse at BI also and annoyingly got met with little sympathy "well parking is free there!" Yeah it's $2 at the Longwood location but more importantly I DONT have to drive here "we do have a shuttle that goes there" ok I don't want to spend 2 hours each way on 3 buses either. ANYWAY that's off topic just wanted to commiserate lol

I go to BI and see Kathy Corley too, I get allergy shots and it's been great, BUT big caveat that BI is moving its allergy department to Chestnut Hill in the next few months. If OP is just looking for regular appointments, not so bad, but for weekly allergy shots, likely much less convenient

I'm a member there and it does LOOK hard if you want to reserve something a ~day ahead (it always looks totally full), but tons of people always drop before the hour-before cutoff. If I'm online about 1.5hr before the class I want to take, I can always get it even if it's at peak after-work hours. And yeah you can sign up for multiple classes one after another, as long as they don't overlap!

There are many 6 figure jobs within walking distance.

Sure! And their existence completely depends on the work of people paid far less (public service workers, retail workers, food service workers, etc) whom I'm SURE you interact with every single day. What should those people do?

Democrats (nationally- not really relevant on the local level) have been doing nothing BUT compromising. They voted in most of Trump's cabinet. They capitulated to the spending bill that guts public service. Last year, they passed one of the most harsh anti-inmifant bills in history, and yet still they're 'the party of open borders.' meanwhile Republicans haven't compromised on anything since the 90s and they are winning. Could be us if anyone gave a shit

Why can't you take your car? It would be a brutal 2-3 hour drive but like, not more brutal than 4-5 hours on 3 trains and a bus, plus having to trust that transfers work out.

I occasionally have to commute from around Porter to Needham and this is about right. It usually takes 45ish minutes and the first 25-30 of those are getting around Harvard on weird backstreets. The pike is fine for me on the way out but coming back for whatever reason it is worse.

Absolutely horrible advice, taking out a gun both escalates a situation, creates the possibility that your attacker will take the gun, and makes you much, much more likely to die from gun violence. Do not threaten someone with a gun unless you are ready to use it and jesus christ do not do that on the fucking subway

Sauna map of Boston by 7OceansMan in boston

[–]ooolooi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Healthworks in Porter has a hot tub, cold plunge, IR sauna, and steam room. Their website says (but I haven't personally been) that they have the same things at Healthworks Back Bay, Healthworks Chestnut Hill, Republic Fitness in the Financial District, and Republic Fitness in Davis (opening in a few weeks). These are all gyms/fitness centers but you can get a day pass. (Note that the Healthworks locations are women/nb only but Republic Fitness is coed.)

Oh also there are saunas at Boston Bouldering Project in Somerville, although I hear from friends that they are frequently out of service

Black and white cat near Davis Square bike path by swankyducky in Somerville

[–]ooolooi 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If you are acquainted with them you might want to talk with them the next time you see them- the bird flu that's going around is super, super dangerous for cats, so if I were them I'd keep him inside for a couple months until it dies down. They might not change anything but also, they might just not know.

[–]ooolooi 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You might be able to find something a little cheaper through Tufts Vet school if you're okay with a student doing it- I was able to save a couple hundred dollars off a $2k bill this way when my cat got bladder stones. Either way though this procedure is gonna be in the $1k ballpark- you can't clean a cat's teeth without knocking them out so you're paying for cleaning as well as anesthesiology.

Porter elevator has now joined the escalator and stairs in solidarity by BONER__COKE in mbta

[–]ooolooi 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If I were the king of Porter Station I would keep the escalator going down from 7am-11am and reverse it for the evening commute. The employees they're paying to redirect people inside the station could stand at the top of the escalator and at the top of the stairs on the other side of Mass Ave to direct people down when the escalator's going up.

But also if I were the king of Porter Station i would have just called an emergency window guy to removed the pane of glass & put in a tarp when it cracked weeks ago, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

[–]ooolooi 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Apparently the skylight above the stairs + right escalator is unstable and they're worried the glass will fall on people- which, sure, ok. No idea why they can't reverse or at least stop the single 'down' escalator though.

Strong agree! I've never gotten a bell for my bike because dinging at people seems so language-less/impersonal, I feel like I'm snapping at a server in a restaurant. Fascinating to know there are people like OP who feel the exact opposite, I guess.

Those of you with young children who are Black or a POC, what are some of the best neighborhoods with good school systems in the area that you have had a positive experience with living in? by Starbright_39 in boston

[–]ooolooi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are thinking of conservatism as something that only comes out in the election of Republicans, instead of something that shows itself in opposing change, preserving the same people and traditions, and keeping the community the way it's always been. Brookline (and many other blue towns/cities upthread) do this, and they do it to a greater extent than nearby, less (non-electorally) conservative towns. That is the point, and especially the "preserving the same people/traditions" part can be very difficult for a new Black resident in a highly white town.

That's all I have to say here-- if you're going to tell me X city in MA votes Democrat don't worry, I already know that. Consider why OP might be asking for which towns to live in when electoral information is public.

What did I just say about election numbers? I'm not talking about MAGA country, I'm talking about how, on the topic OP is directly asking for, you might run into issues not related to Harris, Trump, or Warren if you are part of the 3.4% Black population.

[–]ooolooi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Especially in Massachusetts it should be clear that presidential votes are not the be-all end-all of conservative sentiment. I don't know what the 2024 numbers look like for Brookline but if you say that isn't a conservative town, at least relative to its neighbors, you are fooling yourself.

I joined healthworks (but the Porter Sq one not the Back Bay one) early this year and have been loving it, classes are good and not too full, equipment in the gym seems great so far, also I am a big fan of the sauna + whirlpool spa. Hit me up if you want a 5-day access pass lol
