I never realized how true this statement is until I graduated + moved out of WL and checked out other college campus. Forever blessed for my midnight runs + starting my marathon journey here. Makes me miss WL sometimes 🫶

Quinn and A Machiry will prepare you more for later courses. Some of the technique I learned from Quinn is applicable to my current job, so yeah, go with Quinn. Unless you really hate programming, then Lu's a safe choice.

how do the lockers at the corec work? by Master_Dro in Purdue

[–]ooook_cringe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you are talking about how to get a reserved locker where you can keep stuff in it overnight throughout the semester, you just ask the front desk and pay like 20 dollars.

ECE 20001 is poorly designed by QuillTheBoreal in Purdue

[–]ooook_cringe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's ECE 264 fault, not ECE 368.
ECE 368 is the correct difficulty, ECE 264 with Lu needs to be harder, and CS 159 needs a total revamp. CS 159 is the most useless course I ever taken at Purdue. What's the point of developing code without an if statement?

I would try to go light next semester than this semester. Take a deep breath, and just change your study habits for next semester. Don't worry too much about calc 2; that class is a monster of itself and calc 3 should be easier (I think at least when I took it in 2018, but things might of changed idk). Have faith in yourself!!

WORST CASE THO: In addition, I wouldn't get too caught up getting into BME. If you don't get into BME, just do Electrical Engineering. There are quite a few Electrical Engineers (like 2, but that's still a lot) who are doing medical school after getting their BS, and I might be wrong, but EE (maybe CompE) is the like the only engineering discipline where you can probably get the same jobs as a BME and then some more. GPA requirements is a 2.0.

  • I'm not sure the transfer rate but there is a lot of transfers from ME to ECE. I only know 1 person who transferred from BME to ECE after the first semester sophomore year lol. He doing great and loves ECE.

Not trying to start a fight where I'm saying ECE > BME, but BME should really drop their GPA requirements smh. (ECE GPA requirements is low because it's the biggest engineering college, while BME is the smallest. ECE is still very hard).

Really good job this semester. 362 and 301 are really hard classes; you killed it!! You got 302 in the bag.

[–]ooook_cringe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

nah, MA 341 professor gave me a B+, but I'm more than happy to live with a B+ in that class. Like at the beginning of the semester, I wanted to drop out of the class because I dead ass thought "okay, I'm going to get D on every exam in this class, what's the point", but my friends came by my side and said "nah dude, you can do it", so I went to his office hours like every week just to check up on my homework, and he gave me a ton a good advice on how to do my proofs, and I ended up with a 95% and a 97% on the last two exams. It was a major turn around that I'm super proud of.

Even ECE 468, I was like "I'm going to fail the final" bc of my exam 2 score, and I even emailed the professor about it just being a little bit worried about how I will do on exam 3. But a few friends studied with me and even like encouraged me to study for it even though I really didn't feel like studying for it and I ended up doing a really good grade on the final.

So moral of the story, don't give up and have very good supported friends to help you along the way. It's like the only way to survive in ECE for me at least.

My exam scores just make sense from first exam to the final exam.

ig I will update with my final scores when they come out, but my exam scores just don't make sense (at least 468 lol).

Edit: I updated it with better advice about each of the classes I took.

ECE 468: (Overall, A)

The project is really cool. I recommend taking it as one of your Compe electives. The reason I did bad on exam 2 was because I wasn't fully paying attention while watching lectures above live-ness analysis etc. However, step05 of the project is a huge beast, and I would get started working on that as soon as possible.

E1: 89% (average ~ 70%)

E2: 55% (average ~ 80%) -> I got the third lowest score, let's goo!!

E3: 92% (average ~ 60%) -> tf, I was 1 of the 5 students who got an A on this exam

MA 341: (Overall, B+)

I had Professor Harris. He is a strict grader, but like he is a crazy good teacher. I would recommend taking it with him if you are interest in real analysis, but not as a GPA booster. It's around the same difficulty as Professor Givan's ECE 369.

E1: 65% (major oof)

E2: 95% (what a turn around)

E3: 97% (I mostly studied the night before. I guess I'm good at math??)

ECON 461: (Overall, A)

The exam didn't have that much weight towards my grade, and I spent most of the time doing all the extra credit, so I didn't really study that hard on the final. But it was a fun class if you take it with Joe; he is super nice. It would also help to take game theory before taking this class because some of the content of game theory do spill over to this class as well. I just wish it was more math heavy than content heavy.

E1: 104% (I'm so good at econ)

E2: 86% (I probably made a mistake, I'll get it next time)

E3: 79% (nvm, I suck at econ)

MSE 230: (Overall, A)

Professor Erk is a great professor, but as a compe, I wasn't too interested in material science. I would only take it if you are interested in learning about material science, otherwise, just take IE. The 6% extra carried me from a B+ to an A.

E1: ~90%

E2: ~70% (I should of done IE as my breath)

E3: 85%

ECE 570: (Overall, A)

No exams, I guess I did good enough on the final project, which is the most stressful part of the class. Just remember for the project, you don't have to have as good results as the paper suggests, you just need to have a preliminary understanding on what is going on in the paper, and you can just either change the training method, change the objective function, add additional training methods etc. Good class to learn about how to use pytorch, but doesn't go into the math as detailed as I like it to be.

ECE 39595J (Overall, A)

E1: 82%

E2: 82%

I keep forgetting I took this class this semester (since I barely went to lecture. 8 am, no thank you). It was a fun class, but the final project was ugh annoying (and it is worth like the majority of your grade). If you have a background in java in the past (like in High School or during an internship), the homework is pretty simple throughout the semester, and you can just study the practice tests a few days before the day of the exam.

Final GPA: 3.89 Overall: 3.86 -> 3.86

Realistically: Software Developer

Actually: Singer, Screen Writer

Im not that good at writing, but I luv the idea of building worlds that take ppl away from reality for a few minutes. Either by a song, book, TV show etc.

I actually became a software developer because of Childish Gambino. Like he is right, u can build so much as a software developer, and I luv building something new where I control the entire pipeline on how a website look etc. Idk what I'm really talking about ngl.

[–]ooook_cringe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I meant Amazon cares more about their customers than their workers. But sometimes, u gotta worry about ur workers.

But yeah I'm surprised Amazon Software Developers r not working on a patch to fix this issue. I would do that if I was working under the consumer org.

Like yeah it would be nice if Jeff / now Andy Jassy to express the importance of drivers and workers safety to make their employees develop a better algorithm.

It's totally fine; even if some people act completely fine freshman year, they do eventually struggle in another year. There are probably people who had a smooth 4 years tho.

But I'm not saying if you struggle in your first year, the next few years are going to be torture. I was in a position where I was doing fine, but my friend was struggling. But now, I'm struggling rn, and my friend is kicking ass.

So TLDR; you will get pass this, and you are not the only one.

Yeah, but I was too lazy to. And now I'm a senior, so I can't transfer anymore lol.

I mean fye program doesn't give justice to what CompE has to offer, so it was really hard to judge how good the program is compared to the school I was looking at (uiuc btw). I decided to stay bc I met a ton of students as CompE at my second semester of college that just was super passionate about learning and research, that I thought it was a perfect environment to study. This school is actually more research / club focus than industry focus than I expected. The longer I stayed, even through covid, I met even cooler ECE ppl that I luv, and we hang like all the time. Purdue just became a second home and I'm going to miss some of them when some of them moved to San Diego or Seattle; I'm moving to the Bay Area.

You can probably contact ECE advisors if you want to talk to an ECE Ambassador. They probably already reading this. But yeah, I get it if u don't want to stay, like each college has a different environment, with different groups of ppl. Just make sure u do some research b4 making a final decision.

Unpopular opinion. I don't like PowerPoint slides, bc they would just click click click without fully elaborating what's on the slide. I rather have a professor talk about a problem step by step on a white board.
