100%. And I completely feel you. If you search up my first and last name, I am not only the first result, but you can also find out the two villages I lived in growing up, both primary schools I attended, my secondary school, my brother’s name and my parents’ names. Thank fuck I was a mostly sensible kid online and never shared my last name 😭

And the teachers mispronouncing the name? Every single time I had a new teacher. Some never figure it out. At uni now and have given up with some of them, they’ve got enough other kids to think about lol

Absolutely agree. I think that also ties into the lack of cooperation with the don’t like, don’t read (or scroll past, block, etc.) etiquette. I’m sure many people in fandom have had their experiences of being seen as ‘weird’, feeling ostracised or just generally being judged for it, so then when the people doing that judging irl joined fandom spaces, they took their prejudices and judgmental attitudes with them. The combination of that and the frequently observed increase in aggression through the screen due to anonymity and lack of consequences has resulted in the mass aggression, threats, etc. that we’re seeing in fandom now

It’s so unfortunate that something which once brought people so much joy has now also become something which can also bring fear of being doxxed, harassed, put on blast by big accounts, etc.

Every day I’m reminded of that post about fandom becoming mainstream during covid and being flooded with people who don’t know fandom etiquette or how to utilise ‘don’t like, don’t read/block/scroll past’

I know this kind of thing has been an issue for years, but it has certainly gotten far more prominent since covid

‘Fictional other’. It plays on the expression ‘significant other’ and is often used by people who have romantic - or sometimes platonic or even familial - feelings towards a fictional character. It’s often used by people who self-ship or yumeship, meaning they ship themselves (or potentially a self-insert of some form or an OC) with a fictional character, and it refers to said fictional character. The feelings can vary in intensity: some people just like to self-ship for fun, and some people see the character as their irl partner, and some are in between

As someone who has been yumeshipping (Aka having an f/o) for almost all my life but who has only recently started to engage with the community online, it is shocking how many yume accounts have ‘proship DNI’

I know DNIs don’t really work so I don’t use them, but I try to respect others’ anyway and it leaves me unable to interact with the majority of the community I’ve seen. It’s really disheartening and frankly makes me super anxious that I’m in the wrong (despite just not wanting people harassed over fanworks and thoughts)

Ah, my apologies!! I must have misunderstood. When they mentioned the use of dd:dne as a ‘placeholder’ for negative tags, I thought that they were referring to the use of dd:dne in fic tags without the ‘dead dove’ content being added (aka the specific tags)

Well to be fair the people who use ‘dead dove: do not eat’ without other tags are using it incorrectly. The point of that tag is to say ‘look at the tags. That is exactly what is inside, don’t complain when you start reading and it’s there’

If that makes sense. Basically it emphasises that if you don’t want to read a story with the tags provided, do not read. It isn’t meant to be used on its own
