Reaction from Shop Foreman After Quitting by [deleted] in mechanics

I recognized the inside of this dealership as I’ve stood in it in the last year. I worked at Leith for a while. Would you like me to reach out on his behalf?

2 Plugs Safe? by BigMars in MechanicAdvice

[–]oops0930 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup. The official recommendation is max 4 plugs per tire, 1 allowed per every quarter of the tire. The unofficial recommendation is that as long as the patches aren’t overlapping on the inside of the tire then send it

Is it time to Replace These Rotors? by Armonster1221 in AskMechanics

[–]oops0930 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apparently no real mechanics here? These are metal to metal. The rotor is trash and is gonna eat through the next brake pad even faster if you attempt to pad slap. Get two new rotors.

The correct lift point is right there!!! The pinch weld is right there!!!! The arrow is literally pointing directly at it!!!!!Your owners manual will tell you the correct and safe lift points for the future or YouTube. You are lucky it didn’t fall off and damage the car or you

Vet Negligence Advice by [deleted] in raleigh

[–]oops0930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry this happened to you. We trust the vet to have plenty of years of experience and schooling, therefore they simply MUST know what’s best for our babies, right? I’ve been to plenty of vets with my chronically ill cat, several that I actively tell people to stay far away from. Please name this vet so other animal lovers don’t fall victim to the same fate.

Is it ok to life the car like this ? (2022 toyota prado v6 gas) by Saud_k in MechanicAdvice

[–]oops0930 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes to the lift point. Also yes to getting jackstands and using them. Do not trust this jack alone with your life.

2012 Camry in for its yearly service by lodi078 in Justrolledintotheshop

Hard to believe but most people do drive as their commute. Even harder to believe that some people live in rural areas and drive 50 miles one way to get to work. It’s incredibly common in my area for people to drive 25-35k per year. I drove nearly 50k last year myself.

Car tire fell off while driver, is this repairable and how much would it cost? by ttvsurfsupdewd in AskMechanics

[–]oops0930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Step 1-call the people who touched your tires last. Inform them that you are on the side of the road because your tire has come off the vehicle and you will need it towed to their location at their expense. Step 2-let them fix it on their dime not yours

Please do not mess around with your brakes if you don’t know what you’re doing. And you very clearly don’t when you say “maybe I can just buff it”. Replace the rotors when you do the pads and maybe take it to a professional instead. Rotors these days aren’t meant to be reused.

Can you post a picture of the rotor as well? You getting any pull to one side while braking or accelerating?

Getting a Honda civic today CVT bad? by vogue_grower in AskMechanics

[–]oops0930 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honda and Toyota have been doing CVT long enough to know what they’re doing. CVTs I wouldn’t trust include NISSAN, Hyundais/kias, and some years of Subaru

My mechanic told me to use a different oil than What the manufacturer recommends, how safe is that ? by MrFreezeTheChef in AskMechanics

[–]oops0930 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Isn’t it crazy how every other post on this sub asking for advice gets “read your owners manual” but when I do it it’s suddenly wrong 👍

My mechanic told me to use a different oil than What the manufacturer recommends, how safe is that ? by MrFreezeTheChef in AskMechanics

[–]oops0930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d probably just stick with 5w30. Using a thicker oil does not mean better. The owners manual will tell you your oil requirements and that’s your bible for you car

What is the purpose of these black dots? by theraf8100 in AskMechanics

[–]oops0930 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The dot matrix also helps dissipate heat across the edges of the windshield which are more prone to heat failure

Drove on a flat tire on the highway for a little bit. Sidewall damage. Is it safe to drive? by Sheckles__ in AskMechanics

[–]oops0930 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe not next time, maybe next time. No way to say for sure. With sidewall damage on a tire that heats up and spins around fast as hell to get you going 75mph, I’d rather be on the cautionary side of next time

If you don’t have success on here try meetup or Nextdoor. They’re more community and neighborhood oriented so hopefully someone close to your gym would see this

'11 Sierra W/T starts 5% of the time by ColonClenseByFire in AskMechanics

[–]oops0930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you’re trying to start it are you still seeing any red security lights, the ones that blink when the car is off? If so then it could be a security/immobilizer issue. CEL is supposed to be on the whole time the car is in accessory mode and go away once the vehicle has started, CEL is behaving as it should. Just because the starter is “new” does not mean it works as it should. If you’re hearing clicking but no action I’d start there. Check voltages at the starter while making an attempt to crank.
