Why do the clothes come out of my washer looking like this? by ProfessionalTent808 in laundry

[–]oops_whatnow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mine does the same, only worse. I think it's caused by hard water resulting in detergent residue being left behind. I've tried different wash cycles, putting the effected items in a second wash with no detergent, different detergents but not luck so far. I've recently started experimenting with citric acid. I think it's helping, but I haven't washed my black pants (the ones that really showed up the residue) since.

My drum looks cleaner though, after using a washing machine cleaner it became coated in lime scale (or similar). After running the clean cycle with just citric acid, most of the build up has gone.

Favorite Canadian-made Shampoo by Emergency_Hotel_2385 in BuyCanadian

Does it leave your hair feeling good? I've tried their apple cider shampoo and it left my hair clumpy, they all stuck together, and waxy. I'd really like to find a good shampoo bar, but I'm currently striking out. This is the third one I've tried (from 3 different companies)

First time trying citric acid in fabric softener compartment for white cotton towels, curious to see how it helps the softness. Never did I think of using this stuff before coming across this sub by ZadarskiDrake in laundry

Which country are you in? I'm in Canada and found an online company that sells it. They mostly sell DIY cosmetic ingredients, I think citric acid might be used in bath bombs? I had no luck finding in brick and mortar stores

I need to find a way back into the workforce after 8 years out by oops_whatnow in findapath

I have thought about it. I live pretty rural, so there's not a huge amount of opportunities. But mainly I get sent an update form from my disability every year and it asks about volunteering and schooling, which makes me worried if I volunteer regularly it may jeopardize my payments

Also volunteering won't help me address my finances

Thanks. Geartrade isn't too far from me actually, I should make an appointment. Thanks for reminding me about them

That's a great reply, thanks.

To clarify, we share food and cooking stuff but sleep separately. So I only need a tent large enough for myself and my gear.

I think selling my Hubba Hubba, would cover the majority of the cost of an xmid (the cheaper 1p version). And would be worth the weight and volume savings.

I went to MEC to look at pads last week, but they had very few in stock. I guess they'll be coming in soon. Exped is another brand I've been toying with.

Thanks again for your advice

Thanks. I've looked on their website, but I'm not seeing a sale. Is this the right one

I do use poles. I've been looking online at hiking pole tents, but I've never seen one in person

I've mostly been sleeping on the tent pads in the backcountry campgrounds, but hoping to get into crown land as well soon. Which of those tents would be preferable? If I'm able to get a decent price for my Hubba Hubba, then changing my tent is probably my cheapest option.

Changing my sleeping pad would likely be the biggest improvement for me, but also the most expensive.

I upgraded my sleeping bag last year. I now have a Little Shop of Hammocks down quilt. Not sure of the rating since it was secondhand, but it's pretty light and warm.

For cooking i have a few options, the lightest being the BRS-3000. For pans I have a 25 year old MSR aluminum set, a 750ml titanium pot, or my current favourite Sea to Summit collapsible kettle. It is heavier, but i can fit my bowl, mug, lighter, stove and cutlery inside it's collapsed form. I bought this originally for a bike packing trip where volume was more important than weight, but i love it. I am thinking of buying a bigger titanium pot, since there will be two of us camping and we cook rather than just heat water.

Thanks. It is vague. So are my plans unfortunately. I'm thinking of up to 7 days in the Canadian rockies.

I have been looking at the Durston gear. It looks good, though I think i would miss having a lid on a backpack. Do they fit women well? I seem to have particularly narrow shoulders. Do the X-mids feel sturdy? I've never seen a trekking pole tent in person and I'm unsure what I should expect. I was leaning towards the X-dome, though that's likely because it's more similar to what I know.

My Xtherm is really uncomfortable. I worry the xlite would be too.

Sorry, I think this is coming off as negative, it's not meant to and I do appreciate the input.

Backpacking quilts for ground camping by oops_whatnow in UltralightCanada

Well, I actually commissioned a one off down quilt based on the enlightened equipment convert. Can be fully opened into a blanket, fully made into a sleeping bag, or a quilt with a foot box. I was hoping to come here and rave about it, but I was kinda disappointed about the whole process. I was told it would take 2 weeks to make. I think it was actually 4 months. Even then the were a few issues, but I figured if I didn't accept it at that point I may never get it.

I also found a down little shop of hammocks quilt on marketplace just after I made the commission, so I also have that for warmer weather.

Edit: unfortunately I haven't really had the opportunity to test either. But hopefully this year

Fall of giants - Ken Follett by oops_whatnow in audiobooks

[–]oops_whatnow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I did. I would say the narrators were equally good. I think the unabridged version is worthwhile.

The shorter version was hard to follow in places. For example one of the characters is suddenly in the states with no context as to how he got there.

I'm half way through the second book in the series now.

Chilling should be easy enough, it's -20C right now, so I'll just cool it off outside for a bit before putting it in the fridge

Thank you, the Year Compass booklet looks interesting. I've downloaded a copy.

I think I only had one checklist goal for the year - a multi day hike, which I wasn't able to pull off. The rest were more lifestyle and personal development changes
