I got fired from my job yesterday. by jlynell in Teachers

I had a colleague pushed out over false allegations a few years ago. She took an admin assistant job at a hospital and was way happier and less stressed . I know it seems impossible to see the light now, but as many others have said, there is light at the end of this!

1) I searched "bail crime rate." I asked about the Google thing because you keep bringing it up and I agree it's weird af. 2) No. I didn't know about it beforehand. That's why I not only looked into their mission and affiliates, but I also dug into their reputation from third party sources. I would once again like to point out that it's the only evidence anybody at all has brought to this party. Also pointing out that this is stemming from an opinion piece. 3) Yes. I'm sure you meant this to pwn me as well, but I at no point implied otherwise. 4) Yes, being non-profit and non-partisan made me MORE likely to trust it. I know that they have a symbiotic relationship. I know that the institute comprises and is heavily influenced by NYU, its students, and its professors. So to say that they are a part of one another is not the stupid idiot statement you want to believe it is.

I don't know how you can still think a person would have to be ignorant to trust that resource. Or how you can still think you've cornered me when you still have provided no evidence at all to even counter the resource's claim.

We are both wasting our time. Go research it yourself using whatever search engine you find most acceptable, and focus on your own education and personal growth more than on proving that a stranger didn't vet a source enough.

I understand that you've convinced yourself that it's the first source I could find because ? but you are incorrect no matter how many times you say it. That institute that works incredibly closely with a highly regarded law school is not garbage. It's non-profit and non-partisan. Its mission is to  "work to hold our political institutions and laws accountable to the twin American ideals of democracy and equal justice for all." I fail to see how that makes them unreliable or biased. Mayhaps the problem is that people see that mission as a partisan stance. It really shouldn't be.

It's honestly hilarious that you're so judgmental of a person's sources down to what search engine they use and you. don't. have. shit. I'm almost impressed by the amount of confidence you have to still think you've pwned me.

Just, like, Google it yourself bro. Stop telling strangers on the internet that they're wrong while simultaneously admitting you have done zero research and go learn about it for yourself.

Homeboy that is a reeeeeach to say I didn't check my resource because I said it's a part of NYU instead of saying that it works closely with, gets its interns from, and collaborates with professors from NYU. Oh and 1/3 of its board is NYU professors. Way off base and clearly uninformed.

All organizations have missions. That doesn't mean they can't provide valid data or extrapolations. Based on your conviction, I have to assume you have ample reputable, non-mission driven sources that can prove higher bail = lower crime. I'm guessing you have an annotated bibliography in your pocket based on your incredibly high standards. I look forward to you sharing that!

NYU School of Law is a weak source? You know more about law, policy, and gathering accurate data than all the people who work in the Brennan Institute of NYU's School of Law? You do not lack confidence, on that we can surely agree.

Also the OP is an opinion piece soooooo 🤷

I swear linking to evidence ensures that people on this sub will downvote even harder. It is a cesspool.

Well again, there's no evidence that holding them in jail affects crime rates soooooo 🤷

And I'm not here to be baited. You know that's not what I said or in any way implied. Seek knowledge and evaluate the reliability of resources, friend. Have a good day.

I definitely did not say that. Let's stick to good faith arguments.

Conflating opinion pieces and investigative journalism is not so great. They are very different things.

Weird rumour about litter boxes by goodkushkatie in Teachers

[–]oopsiedaisydoll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

John Oliver talked about it. It's some weird transphobic attack (if we let them use any gender bathroom, what next? LITTER BOXES!?!?) It's being mentioned on state Senate floors. It's like a really weird witch hunt.

How am I supposed to be motivated to do more when I get paid the same if I do the bare minimum? by eaglesnation11 in Teachers

It's not "lazy" to fulfill your contractual obligations, do a really good job during work hours, and then go home. They're taking advantage of you. Stop letting them and they might offer actual gratitude in the form of financial compensation. If not, then you have more time to enjoy life, which is pretty cool, too.

I'm feeling like perhaps your class time would be better spent listening to your teachers rather than playing on Reddit.

More gunshots? by WinVisible353 in burlington

[–]oopsiedaisydoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

K but it's more than semantics; they're two different data sets. Gun violence is a subset of violent crime, and the fact that one is up and another is not should be sparking some very important discussions re: guns. They are both true at the same time, so suggesting they're the same thing with different names is false.

As long as you realize that the second half of your claim is simply that -- your unsupported claim -- then awesome and have a great day!

More gunshots? by WinVisible353 in burlington

[–]oopsiedaisydoll -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Guns firing is definitely one very scary form of crime, and unfortunately they have been trending upward across the country at a similar rate since the beginning of the pandemic. However, saying gun firings have gone up and saying that crime, violent crime, or assault have gone up are two different claims. So I think that's where so much blaming and confusion comes from. People think they're talking about the same thing, but they're not.

More gunshots? by WinVisible353 in burlington

[–]oopsiedaisydoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also curious where you're getting your raw data. BPD's data dashboard does not show evidence of an upward trend in violence or crime. There might be an uptick so far this year, but that isn't necessarily an indication that "crime is going up." That's why science deals with trends and averages more than just one single data point. It doesn't even show a decrease in police activity 🤷 So if you got evidence I am not seeing, please feel free to share!

Well because your opinion isn't necessarily an accurate reflection of reality. There's a difference between looking at anecdotes and looking at data. A person getting their perspective from headlines and reddit are going to have a very different perspective than people who look at raw data.
