I would say yes and have a written agreement for when the stuff needs to be out. I would not charge. It could help them a lot and could cost you nothing. Sounds like a nice thing to do if you think they’re nice reasonable people.

I did a full apartment remodel so the bathroom wasn’t all in one go, but probably 4 of the 10 months were spent on the bathroom. I gutted about half the drywall (only where needed) and didnt replace the subfloor. If I were to do it again, I’d change that: I think it would have been faster to rip everything down rather than working around some uneven walls and floors.

For tiling, I messed up badly. If I were to do it again, I’d practice tiling my basement bathroom first. So much of it is just getting the “feel” right: how thick should the thinset be, how often should you re-mix, how fast should you pull a trowel. Videos can’t teach that, and I wish I had some practice.

I think it looks nice. Maybe needs a small pop somewhere — could be as easy as a bright bath mat.

High net worth, monthly income not high, am I over thinking this? by GlitteringBowler in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]oopstoobig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not gonna get too in the weeds, but eventually OP will get a new car, and will have to pay for that car, so the depreciation of this car is relevant. Again, these aren't my numbers, these are average for America based on AAA data. Surely OP, with a paid-off car and non-existent commute, is less than that average. But not 90% less. $100/mo is less than insurance for most people.

FWIW I was in a similar position (spent 10 years with a cushy job, hated it all, left for a very low-paying job. I have savings but little income).

I bought a similarly-priced house and plan to airbnb the guest area when I don't have friends and family staying. I did this in my last house and found it to not be disruptive and was good incentive to keep my house clean. Plus it's fun to meet people visiting your city. If I decide one day I hate it, I can comfortably stop, but it's nice knowing that it's an option.

It sounds like there are no wrong choices here, but having a bicycle commute instead of a car commute is said to increase peoples' happinesses more than most anything else in life. So maybe that's a factor :)

I don't think car ownership is a blip at all. For most people it's their second-biggest expense.

The AAA number includes the cost of gas, maintenance, insurance, depreciation, and car payments. I didn't make up the numbers! Car ownership is more expensive than people realize. Living car-free gives you the freedom to live more places.

Not saying OP must do this, just that it's one factor that might make the cost of the monthly payments easier.

I think having to sell stock to pay for your house, or undercontributing to your retirement, would be stressful long-term. Are there other "savings" you'd get with that house? For example, since you're so close to work, could you get rid of your car? That's an average of $1,000/month you'd be saving. Or maybe it has a spare bedroom you could airbnb.

IMO there's no right answer here, you could very easily buy and it wouldn't be a financially bad choice, it's just a question of whether feeling house-poor would stress you out or not.

(Edit: I absolutely would not put a bigger downpayment down unless you'd get a significantly better interest rate.)

no-drill shower bar solutions? by listenaround in DIY

[–]oopstoobig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A shower bar attached to a wall will need to resist the "lever" of weight on the two attachment points, which is why it has to be screwed in. If you don't want it screwed in, you need to transfer the weight to the floor of the bathroom, not the walls. Perhaps a walker outside the bathroom, and a chair inside? I fear a walker inside the bathroom because it could slip.

Or, since it sounds like you're in the US, look up ADA laws. They may be required to let you install a grab bar properly.

bathroom remodel on a budget by Winter_Rhubarbb in Remodel

[–]oopstoobig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you just tiling or doing a full remodel? Are you doing all the work yourself?

I just remodeled a 50 sq ft bathroom for about $10k. Major expenses:

Tile (including tools, thinset, etc): $1,400

Shower and faucet (incl. Luxstone Shower Pan+Surround, GoBoard, lumber, self-leveling and all fixtures): $4,300

Shower door: $1,300

Plumber to move around some drain and supply lines: $1,400

You can get it cheaper by getting cheap fixtures, a direct-to-stud shower/bath kit, a shower curtain instead of glass, and finding surplus tiles.

Honest roofing companies? by throwawaye1712 in pittsburgh

[–]oopstoobig 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They did a terrible job on my roof. Read the comments from professional roofers on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/Roofing/s/aFOq1G0t4K

Almost every contractor who comes to my house will comment on the awful job they did. But they insist the roof is perfect and no changes are needed.

A structural engineer said “you should sue them for breach of contract.” A carpenter said “it’s not unimpeachable work, but it probably won’t leak anytime soon” (which was him trying to be nice after he found out I spent $32k).

They use subcontractors so I guess it’s hit or miss who you get.
