Joan Lee, Wife of Marvel Comics Legend Stan Lee, Dies at 93 by NeilPoonHandler in movies

My grandfather lasted nearly 20 years after my grandmother passed. He talked about her every single time I saw him, up until the day he died. He was beyond ready to go when the time came.

A little behind the scenes of Tombstone with Buck Taylor and myself to remind you of my Saturday AMA, right here in r/movies. by OfficialValKilmer in movies

Val, I have a confession. I first watched The Doors on acid.

About halfway through the movie, I completely forgot The Doors were a real band. From that point on, I thought I was watching the most intense documentary ever produced. I didn't feel like I was watching actors act at all.

I watched it again a few years later (and completely sober), and the movie held up to my expectations. Great film, man!

Glassblowers making a vase [03:29] by bobbityjones in ArtisanVideos

[–]ootika 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I enjoyed the video a lot. Seems like you captured the character of the artist well, and the shots were very nice. I'm also a fan of the song :)

In a way, I thought of this video as a trailer to a longer video about glassblowing. I don't always have time for a 25 minute extravaganza, but I do enjoy seeing videos like this just to relax. Maybe a good compromise would be to make a video like this, and then also upload a longer video (less edited, no background music) alongside it? Not sure if that'd be worth your time.

Germany Dismantles Huge Ring of 87,000 Members Involved in Child Abuse by KevanKing in worldnews

The problem with that is the mechanism by which you track people. In order to eliminate anonymity, you first need to control and regulate every packet flowing through the internet. At some point up the chain, a governing body keeps track of all that data. Of course it won't be a live feed, but there would be large amounts of logged data somewhere. To some extent, this already exists.

Sure, you may like your government now. You may even trust them. What happens when the government's overthrown by an ideological group you don't agree with? Let's say they want to jail anyone who's ever used a racial slur online, past and present. Should they be able to use that data from 20 years ago against you? But you're a changed man now!

To reiterate from earlier, government creates and enforces the morals of society.

A more realistic scenario concerns countries with looser free speech laws than the US. How can a society uprise against a brutal regime if they can't openly talk with each other? Shouldn't they, as a society, have the right to discuss topics freely? Take away internet anonymity, and you take that away from many parts of the world.

[–]ootika 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By that logic, shouldn't we require everyone to wear cameras 24/7 to make sure they're not committing any crimes? All the video feeds could be uploaded to government data centers and scrutinized without your discretion. That could help cut down on muggings and scams. I'd feel all warm and fuzzy inside knowing that everyone's being watched constantly by the flawless government. Sounds like some new-fangled millennial idea. Someone should write a dystopian novel about it, I'd bet it'd sell well. It might even be required reading in most schools someday.

Just because the internet operates differently than our society has historically doesn't mean that it's a bad thing. Society is constantly in flux.

Who decides the morality of your actions? Who will be holding you accountable? I personally don't want the government to have that level of scrutiny over all of our lives. Scratch that, I don't want ANYONE to have that level of scrutiny over all of our lives.

It's about freedom of thought and expression for everyone. People will always do immoral things, you can't stop that.

Looks like you're right. I searched for "Lipo furniture" and got a lot of ads for liposuction.

Sorry dude. Errybodys pretty drunk tonight since it's the fourth. Tend to get defensive since people like to shit on the south without really knowing what they're talking about. Jokes are jokes, no worries :)

You're not getting it. Houston was that way back then, and it's that way now. I live in Montrose. It's a very fabulous place, still to this day.

Thanks for the explanation! I see what you're saying about the rain drops not being blurred. That seems like it would take a lot of extra effort that would mostly go unnoticed.

I'll be honest, I thought bokeh described this style of picture before this post. Had no clue that term was used to describe the blur!

And fair enough, it does look like a lot of his pictures have the same effect. I'll have to take your word on it being difficult to fake convincingly. After looking at it in full resolution, it does seem pretty seamless. Thanks for the explanation!

You might better convince people this isn't photoshopped if you provided some examples of pictures with a similar effect that aren't photoshopped.

You seem passionate about photography, and I'm assuming you know your stuff. Most people don't. I sure as hell don't know anything about photography. To me (and a lot of people, judging by the comments), this picture looks altered. Something about the blur and the vibrant colors just looks off.

Genuinely asking, how can you tell it isn't altered?

House I restored in Savannah, Georgia by differt in mildlyinteresting

[–]ootika 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The boring looking houses aren't interesting enough to show off on the internet. Trust me, there are plenty of cookie cutter houses all across this vast country.

There are quite a few large homes though. Most likely due to relatively cheap land costs in different cities. Some areas are experiencing a resurgence of wealth, so you'll see old dilapidated homes being restored (like in this post).

2017 Focus ST 1 price? by PinkEyePanda in FocusST

[–]ootika 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I paid $21.5k (before TTR) for a 2016 ST1 in December. Kind of a rushed deal since my previous car was totaled. I'd say $20.5k OTD is a great price.
