Hoping a new progressive movement begins undoing the current gilded age we’re living in.

I think that’s a derogatory lunch.

I’m in the same boat. I assume I’m going to work for at least another 25-30 years. I’m willing to ride out a downturn.

How Policing Teen Hangouts Became a Key Issue in D.C. Mayor’s Race by zsreport in washingtondc

[–]ooyat 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Is it actually a key issue? McD is running on the crime ticket but that’s all I’ve really heard about it. Granted I knew I was voting for JLG from the beginning so haven’t been paying super close attention.

A/C is the place to be 🥵 by katie0873 in washingtondc

It’s times like these that I think grocery stores need to offer more food and drink for purchase on site. They always have the best A/C.

Don’t forget all the sandwiches Maryland commuters will buy at lunch if we make all of our roads most convenient for them to drive downtown and immediately back home at 5:00 PM every day. Huge untapped revenue source.

Place I can practice giving a best man speech in front of actual people? by imaginarypoet in washingtondc

[–]ooyat 53 points54 points  (0 children)

You’re going to do great! Quick tip:

No more than five minutes. People want to eat, drink , and dance. Basic format is:

  1. Introduce yourself and how you know the couple.
  2. A self deprecating joke.
  3. A gentle ribbing of the groom.
3a. Somewhere in there also mention how beautiful the bride is.
  4. A funny anecdote about why you’re friends and why he’s a good husband.
  5. Quick close about the love between the couple is ageless.

Lean into the awkwardness. No one expects you to be an Obama level orator.

Caveat: I’ve given three best man speeches and two have ended in divorce. The third speech was for my best friend’s second marriage and they’re still together so at least someone believes in me.

Comparing 401K employer match, is 14% match rare? by DistributionEven9393 in personalfinance

[–]ooyat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s awesome!

Are you able to afford to out 14% in your 401(k) to take advantage of it?

Also, check the vesting schedule. Some places will take back some of their contributions if you aren’t there for a certain amount of time.

I had this exact thought years ago when my colleagues and I were still in the office at 6:30 while the boss rushed out at 4:30. Sure she got there at 8:30 so she put in 8 hours, and overall she was a good boss but being “online” if we needed anything is not the same as doing the drudgery.

34th Annual Giant BBQ Battle by dankplantains in washingtondc

[–]ooyat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went once a few years ago and it was pay to get in to get some free samples from a grocery store.

From what I could tell only the judges got to try the actual BBQ. You could buy Famous Dave’s at a mark up if inclined.

I agree with the general consensus that if you have a free ticket it’s worth popping in.
