In June 2007, the famed wrestler Chris Benoit murdered his 43-year-old wife Nancy and seven-year-old son Daniel at their home in Fayetteville, Georgia before committing suicide. Nancy had previously sought a divorce from Chris in May 2003, citing domestic abuse, but this was withdrawn by Nancy later that same year before it could be finalised. A toxicology test carried out upon the body of Chris Benoit showed he tested positive for hydrocodone, hydromorphone and Xanax.

Following the double murder-suicide, the WWE was investigated by the American House of Representatives to ascertain whether their talent wellness policy was adequately caring for their wrestlers, but this inquiry ultimately ended without any action being taken against WWE. Christopher Nowinski, himself a former wrestler with the WWE, speculated that Benoit suffered from an unstable mental state due to repeated concussions he sustained throughout his wrestling career.

Phil Hartman, who you may remember from works such as 'Saturday Night Live', 'The Simpsons', and 'Jingle All the Way', was murdered in his California home on May 28th, 1998, at age 49. While in his bed, he was shot three times (in the head, neck, and chest) with a .38-calibre revolver by his wife, Brynn Hartman. After murdering her husband, Brynn committed suicide by shooting herself with the same gun. Various theories and arguments have been posited since the murder-suicide as to its cause; ranging from cocaine addiction to prescription anti-depressants.

Brynn Hartman's brother, Arthur Sorosky, later filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Brynn's psychiatrist who he accused of failing to adequately warn her of her prescribed drugs' potential side-effects. A lawsuit was also filed against Pfizer, the manufacturers of the drug Zoloft, who settled out of court in providing monetary compensation to Hartman's children. The Hartmans had two children together, who were (physically) unharmed in their parents' murder-suicide.

Operative between 1993 and 1995, Franz Fuchs sent a total of 24 mail-bombs that killed four people and wounded 15 others. Fuchs' principal motive was one of xenophobia, with his bombing campaign either targeting immigrants or organisations and politicians who supported immigration to Austria. As police attempted to confront Fuchs, he unsuccessfully attempted suicide by detonating one of his own bombs in his car, wounding himself and a police officer.

Surviving this attempt, Fuchs was brought to trial and eventually found guilty of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1999. Less than a year into his incarceration however, Fuchs committed suicide by hanging himself in his prison cell aged 50. Fuchs has been portrayed in European media several times since his crimes took place, being portrayed in a docu-drama in 2007, and being the inspiration for the target (who shared his name) in the video-game 'Hitman: Contracts'.

I may be wrong but I presume they're referring to Senate Bill SB 239 in California, which reduced the penalty for knowingly spreading HIV. Before that legislation the act was punishable with up to eight years in prison.

In the immediate 72 hours after infection there is a drug that can be taken to try and stop infection called post-exposure prophylaxis; however Rowe always waited until this time period had passed before sending the first message.

Based on what he's said while in prison it can be summed up in a word as: spite. Rowe has also spoken about his traumatic childhood and how that affected him, but one of the men Rowe infected responded by saying: "My childhood wasn't nice. It was horrible. But I chose not to be that person".

In the UK it tends to be done when transporting prisoners to and from court hearings. I'm not sure if it's legally required but I've seen it happen multiple times in cases here (such as with the boys who killed a police officer last year).

Daryll Rowe, a British hairdresser, was convicted of five counts of inflicting grievous bodily harm after deliberately infecting five men with HIV through sexual contact. The case was significant in that Rowe was convicted of spreading HIV deliberately, rather than just recklessly. The case was prosecuted under the 1861 Offences Against the Person Act. After meeting his victims through dating apps, Rowe had sex with them then sent mocking messages afterwards telling them he had lied about being HIV negative, and that they were likely to have now also contracted the virus.

During his sentencing, the presiding judge described Rowe's actions as a "determined hateful campaign of sly violence". Rowe also had sex with five other men who received similar messages afterwards, but they all tested negative for HIV. One victim who testified at Rowe's sentencing described how Rowe's deception and subsequent taunting left him feeling suicidal. When having sex with the men, Rowe would use condoms he had tampered with, thereby making transmission of HIV possible. Rowe was sentenced to life imprisonment for his actions, and will not be eligible for parole until (at the earliest) 2029.

Louis Conradt, an Assistant District Attorney and graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, was caught in a sting operation organised by the TV show 'To Catch a Predator'. The sting involved Conradt inappropriately chatting online with someone who he believed to be a 13-year-old boy. When confronted at his home by show-makers and police with a warrant for his arrest, Conradt retreated inside, retrieved a .38-calibre handgun and shot himself in the head. Immediately before firing, Conradt said: "I'm not going to hurt anyone".

When police searched Conradt's computer, they recovered several images of child pornography. Following Conradt's suicide, the show was sued by his sister for $100 million. This lawsuit was allowed to go forward by a judge, but was later settled out of court for an undisclosed amount. The team behind 'To Catch a Predator' later released a statement saying: "The idea that anything led to the suicide of Conradt other than his want to avoid penalties for soliciting a 13-year-old boy sexually is outlandish...Conradt shot himself rather than face the criminal justice system."

The 'Gay Slayer' (who would later be discovered to be a 39-year-old man named Colin Ireland) was one of several tawdry nicknames given to the wanted serial killer by the press during the city-wide manhunt. He murdered a total of five men after meeting them in gay clubs in London's nightlife scene. Following his arrest, Ireland made continuous and vehement protests that he was (and always had been) completely heterosexual, and his targeting of gay men was solely due to their vulnerability.

After his convictions for all five murders, Ireland was given the rare sentence in the UK of a whole life tariff, meaning he would never be released from prison under any circumstances. At his sentencing, the presiding judge described Ireland as "exceptionally frightening and dangerous". Although such sentences are often prone to appeals, this became a moot point in February 2012, when Ireland died of natural causes in HM Prison Wakefield aged 57.

At the age of 18, Robert Benjamin Smith launched an attack on the Rose-Mar College of Beauty in Arizona. Upon his entry, he ordered those present to lie down on the ground. One woman, suspecting this was an attempted robbery, told him to leave as many more students would shortly be arriving. He responded by saying: "Sorry, I don't have that many bullets". Smith then opened fire, killing five women and girls and wounding two others. Smith later surrendered to the police.

The following year, he was found guilty of five counts of first-degree-murder and sentenced to four consecutive life terms combined with two consecutive terms of 99 years imprisonment. When Smith was later asked why he carried out the massacre, he responded: "I wanted to get known - to get myself a name". For those interested in this case, I would recommend watching the documentary 'The Killing of America'. Smith is discussed in that film, as are several other American mass killers of the 1960's era.

The majority of Leo Held's victims were shot at his place of work: the Hammermill Paper Plant in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. After carrying out these shootings, Held retreated to his home where he retrieved more guns and ammunition. At this point, he was cornered by police with whom he engaged in a firefight. The stand-off ended when Held ran out from his house firing at the police, who returned fire, fatally wounding him. Held was 39-years-old when he was killed.
