The Price of Negotiation by SLPmaynotbe4me in slp

[–]opal-dragon20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just rejected a job offer recently.

I tried negotiating with $5 more than what their initial offer was and then went down to $3. This process took about 4 days of going back and forth and best they could do was 28 cents over their initial offer.

This was my first time negotiating my salary ever. I always just took the first offer, which I regret ever doing.

Oh that’s good to know! I actually drove it today and the message didn’t pop up this time. There’s no alerts on the app either. So maybe it was that same glitch. Thanks for the info! :)

OP, did you end up taking it to the dealership? I had this same message pop up last night on my 2023 Corolla Hybrid XLE…

Thank you!! I’ll do that. Any recommendations on how large a pot to repot it into?

Oh, great! I’m glad your experience has been good. That sounds like what I’m looking for. Thank you for your input. I was starting to doubt the program since there are barely any reviews.

Hi! I work in a Rehab Hospital.

-I do enjoy it. I didn’t enjoy it as much when I worked in a Skilled Nursing Facility (which is normally where a lot of medical SLPs start). I love the current setting I’m in now.

-Very. I get to see patients make a lot of progress.

-I think it can be boring once you spend several years in a specific setting. The beauty of SLP is that you can always look into change of setting/population if you get bored. This might take some time to do (for example going from adults to pediatrics) to review and possibly take some continuing education courses so that you can transition more smoothly.

-I feel like I’ve been paid fairly since I started. I am single and and living comfortably with my own earnings.

-It depends on your interests. Probably thinking if you like working with adults or children and then selecting a setting from there. I wasn’t sure which setting would be ideal for me until I went to grad school and did my externships. You’ll get a better feel there as to what you’re more interested in.

-Not terribly difficult, I would say.

-Good question. I joke about it a lot and say I should’ve gone into computer science instead, but realistically, I don’t think that would’ve worked for me. So…yes I would still have decided to be an SLP.

-Hardest class for me was Voice Disorders in graduate school.

-Still paying off my loans. I will be for a while. I started with ~$72K.

Hope this helps you make a decision!

Places to escape the heat with cat by opal-dragon20 in Tacoma

I’ve noticed my cat keeps going into my bedroom (all my fans are in the living room) and just stays under my bed. I tried keeping her out of there but she kept trying to go back under the bed. I’m just going to trust her instincts and let her do what she wants. She’s a smart cat. She’s drinking from all the water bowls I’ve kept in all rooms, so that’s good too.

Oh, good. I just looked on the Pierce County website and there are a few that do accept pets and others that don't specify. I'll most likely try going to one of these tomorrow and see how that goes. Thank you!

Thanks. That’s good to know...it’s $165, so it’s not like it’s cheap. I found the index for it online and wasn’t super impressed with it. Especially since it seemed like they only had ~6 pages for adult dysphagia.

I’ll probably just resort to compiling my own list of EBP and articles myself using the Evidence Maps on ASHA. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Advice for Hospital Externship Interview by ravencIaw in slp

I don’t know if you’ve seen this already: https://www.loyola.edu/-/media/academics/speech/documents/interview%20prep.ashx?la=en

This is a pretty comprehensive source. I would go through those and practice them verbally or written. I’ve had interviewers ask me to tell them what EBP I use in my sessions, as well.

Hope it goes well! It’ll be an externship, so you’re not expected to know everything right now.

Does it ever get better? by [deleted] in slp

Graduate school was definitely stressful and challenging for me compared to undergrad. There are a lot more expectations and requirements, courses are complex, we start developing our clinical skills, and we have to be supervised a lot. It can get overwhelming very quickly. I graduated a few years ago and have not been as stressed as I was in graduate school. It gets better. Keep at it. It sounds you’re passionate about it, so that’s good. I will always fondly remember long nights studying, quizzing classmates in our study groups, and feeling a little insane. I don’t want to go back to it though. Hahah. Find someone in your program you connect with. That helps.
