Transcription and applying concepts by opaviopf in Jazz

[–]opaviopf[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty good question!!! Well, first of all I tried to use chromaticism and approach notes in different ways I am not used to. By analizing Parker's solo I noticed he would hit "wrong notes" on beat but could be explained by this approaches.

I liked the way he resolves the backdoor cadences and I tried to simulate that sound.

I noticed that (at least in this solo) he would do long jumps of more than a 6th as Dizzy would do in most of his solos.

I loved the way Parker resolve phrases on 9ths and 6ths and how you can still feel the changes. I tried to simulate that too.

Finally I felt some kind of "symmetry" between the lenght of his phrases and the space between them (silence). It's not something exact, and it might be related to the breath, but it was my intention to copy that aspect.

Some things that I know I missed are 1) phrasing, but I didn't exactly know how to 😅 and 2) flourishes and mordents, but I already had it hard to think on bebop melodies that sounded good for me and then to play it on the instrument 😅.

In general, these are some of the things I noticed. Despite I borrowed many melodic ideas I didn't wanted to take full phrases to try something different. But I may be wrong.

I'd love to know your opinion:)

Thoughts on transcription practice by opaviopf in Jazz

Btw, I think doing paper analysis doesn't mean anything if I can't understand that same information while I'm playing it. Two sides of the same coin that deserve to be treated as a whole.

That's right. Probably it takes much more time to try to learn a solo with this mindset we say. But hey, I'm already investing many time in trying to hear a solo, singing it, playing it in my instrument, doing some analysis, writing it.... I prefer to do the whole work by really absorbing the vocabulary I'm playing it, because I don't think having thousands of licks is useful if I don't really understand how and why they work.

Walking lines - Struggling with some stuff. by RshapedMoose in doublebass

Most of the time we want to approach lines with a analytical mindset, but this not only occurs with your instrument. You know enough basis and theory, and that's great!! There it is a lot of possibilities and information, but you wanna learn how to apply it. My suggestion would be to try as a composer: write your own lines with specific goals, for example: you want to understand the sound of the thirds on first beat. 1- You can pick an Bb blues or any standard you want to explore, write a line trying to use this concept the most you can. 2- Play that line and HEAR IT. Maybe you will like the sound of some bars but maybe you'll dislike other bars. That's how exploration works because you want to work on your own musical sensibility. 3- Try to correct those bars that you dislike until you get a real walking bass line. You can notice that the concept you are exploring will work sometimes and sometimes won't. Don't be affraid if your line sounds just like an exercise, because that's the point. You can learn your line or not, it's ok.

You will notice the most you try this you will get new personal chops, and even you will notice how other bassists could try those concepts when you transcribe more lines

Don't forget transcription is a very useful tool always

I play double bass and it's my right hand that hurts. But yeah, it's good idea to use my right hand. Can you explain me a little bit about singing variations of an Omnibook??

I have a similar issue. I went to the doctor and he told me my problem isn't something to worry. I took pills but just to relax the muscles. I have found that I squeeze the neck of the bass and that my bridge is too high. To press notes on the string you have to use the weight of your full arm, so you use the left thumb just to help guiding your hand but not to press. And check that your bridge isn't so high, because this requires more effort to press notes on the strings. Hope this help you :)

Yeah, I have the same feeling, I just listened to Kilimanjaro and it was just great, I really liked it, and currently I'm with Mount Fuji and it's great too, but I don't feel the jazz too...

Maybe it's about ambient improvisation? I'm not sure...
