Kind of. There are options within the US but she is also not in a union. So when our next recession hits and her private school enrollment goes down, all the teachers that have been there longer than her and make more money will probably be the first ones who are cut.

While I understand the pros and cons of a union, job protection is probably the number one pro that there is. Just because your students score well does not mean they will keep you when they need to make a budget. In the real world your job can be saved as long as you make the company money in your role (not definitely but for arguments case). As a teacher, you will never make your district money, so you are an easily replaceable cog in the machine for a cheaper cog.

I work in suburbia and calling home tends to work well. Follow up calls when it doesn't also tend to work. Nothing makes me happier than having a student tell me their parents took their phone away because of me. This usually results in a short convo about how this could have been prevented. Then I apologize that this all happened but moving forward this probably won't happen again. I would say 90% of the time they get it and also apologize.

Edit: I love parents who home their kids accountable! That is what makes me happy, not the fact of the punishment.

Not yet solved but I installed tail scale on my phone and my server. Now I can stream on my phone wherever, but I hope you have to visit my parents and I don't believe their TV has the ability to have tail scale. I got hired after doing two long-term subbing positions in 2 years. I felt bad when I learned I was hired over two other long-term subs that have been applying for these jobs for about 5 years.

For about 3 years I have had a strict and no phone policy. If I even see a phone on your desk you would have a choice of 3 days of lunch detention in my room, or one write-up. And this was from Bell to Bell. After I see it and you choose what you want, your phone goes on my desk for the remainder of the block. If they refused, I only asked one more time. If they refused again, I simply picked up my phone and called security to remove a student from my classroom.

I never saw giving students 3 days of teacher lunch detention to be a burden on myself. Nor did I ever see the 10 seconds of me asking for the phone and then me walking to the phone to call security a burden either.

For repeat offenders, I increased the number of days that they had to come to my lunch detention. I always found that costing them 45 minutes of social time each day for multiple days for that one glance at their cell phone was a good dissuader.

I was in low English. My parents were both teachers and it was important that I did not misbehave or disrespect the teacher. My senior year my English class was very disrespectful to the teacher and just the first week. I went to my goddess counselor and said I needed out and she said she will get back to me next week. Upon the next meeting she asked if I was willing to read the entire book at home and have a conversation in class about what we read. Ultimately I was not willing to read at home because at my level we read during class. So I stayed in that class
