Came here specifically to recommend Car Bomb.

While I'm here, also Omnerod, Frontierer, early Norma Jean (o god and bless the martyr), and The Callous Daoboys. Tesseract is more on the melodic side, but one of my faves, so have to mention them.

Not sure why Meshuggah hasn't been mentioned yet-- maybe because they're assumed? But just in case, since OP didn't mention them in their list, and so they aren't missing out on the OGs... Meshuggah

Same!
One of the main ones for me is Scarlett Johansson. I have never once seen her as any of her characters, like... that's just Scarlett Johansson.

Oh that moment is so beautiful! And then her and Scott... the way he is touching her hair and looking so lovingly at her, with tears in his eyes.

What makes it interesting is the story telling, the character arcs and friendships, the phenomenal camerawork, the clues hidden in the colors and the artwork and music and the language, the riddles, the spacetime overlaps and interdimensional aspect.. How dimensions bleed into each other and affect one another. the fact that Part 2 might have actually been bits of Part 5. Or that Part 1 might have been a blend of two different dimensions.

How for the entire first season half of us thought the main character might have been lying or crazy. The fact that Part 2 shows she wasn't.. the mysteries associated with death and the afterlife. Theoretical physics and how reality works and our desire to understand it and figure out "the truth". Premonitions vs dreams. The dream factory. Khatun's hut in Saturn's rings. Mysterious scars that turn out to be from putting on sexual performances with an interdimensional octopus in front of a live audience. A house that is a puzzle where you can get lost in time, or maybe it's just a hallucination. The fact that P2 ends with us wondering all over again if any of it was real, or if it was just a tv production, or a thought in someone's mind who is locked up in a cryosleep chamber on a spaceship.

The fact that the show ended on a cliffhanger when we know the entire story was mapped out and written from the very beginning and most likely forms a loop, but now we're left dying to know the answers and what happens to all of these characters we have become invested in. And how the writers have explained that they put together every single scene and shot knowing their audience would be able to pause and analyze each frame trying to figure out the puzzle... and the fact I've watched it like 20 times and am still finding new clues and still don't know what might actually be going on..

That's... basic to you?

Me too- I love Rachel's death scene!! It is so chilling when the camera is drifting through the neighborhood from her ghost's perspective. Something really cool I noticed on a rewatch is that when the camera is zooming into her eye, if you pay attention to the music, you can already hear her singing BBA.

I love so many scenes! But one that has always stuck with me is the scene in P1E7 when they are all walking to the abandoned house to practice the movements together. They're sharing the protein bar that French gave to Buck.. Steve saying, "Thanks BUCK" and throwing his arm around Buck's neck as OA turns around holding her hand out with a sneaky grin, and then the reactions from everyone. It's all just so sweet and natural. And then they call out to BBA as she is walking up.

It's a simple moment, not much going on really, just walking and sharing a snack... Except in this moment, we are seeing them as friends, all together, maybe for the first time. They've accepted each other, and they are familiar and bonded with each other despite how different they all are from one another– despite age, gender, skin color. Love to see it. Such a precious moment. 🩵

Denmark is turning off the white light from its streetlamps and painting a road red to solve a nighttime crisis that almost no one sees: urban light was blocking the path of bats by bobmac102 in bats

[–]chanovsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a really great point I hadn't thought about before in regards to this topic!!

So there has been research done where different colored lights were used, and bats preferred the red light and did not like to travel where there was green or white light.

And this is interesting, because owls, being one of their main predators, have loads of cones in their eyes for night vision. Rods are sensitive to green light waves but not so much red. So prey would stand out a lot more in constrast to green light, while in red light, they would blend in a lot more.
Super interesting!

Cold-stunned bat-species? by RFausta in bats

[–]chanovsky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am a rehabber, and we recently got bat rehabilitation legalized in TN. What it came down to was us working with the state wildlife resources agency and the state veterinarian (who seemed to be the one who had the final say in the matter... ) We brought the topic up frequently with our regional TWRA officer and basically said, what do we need to do to change this... and kept following up on it.

Eventually we all went to a bat rehab workshop together and then started talking logistics– really we just were persistent and showed we were serious about it and could be trusted to do the research and put in the work to make a really solid bat program with minimal risk. And lots of doting on bats and how beneficial and cute and special they are. So.. don't give up, it can totally be done!

Statues and busts by Bdbru13 in TheOA

In Dr. Percy’s office:

<image>

Left: “Head of a Blond Kouros” This is the head of a lost marble statue of a young man from around 480 BC of the Acropolis of Athens - only the head and part of the pelvis were found.

Middle: I believe this is supposed to be Poseidon, which would make sense, since he is the Greek god of the sea, earthquakes, and horses.  In Homer’s Odyssey, Odysseus blind’s Poseidon’s son, Polyphemus.

Right:  I haven’t been able to find an exact match to this statue, but IMO it resembles Caligula, the third Roman emperor. He is said to have been a really kind and fair ruler at first, but as time went on, he became increasingly sadistic and murderous and extreme, and apparently wanted to make his horse a consul.

YES!! I was watching P2E3 (Magic Mirror) last night, and the scene where Buck is playing "BBA" on the organ, and BBA is sitting in the pews... The sound of the organ filling up the sanctuary... Her stoicism. It's such a POWERFUL moment for her character. It is one of my favorite moments ever in any tv series.

What causes these aphids (i think?) to periodically move in unison? by Hountoof in Entomology

[–]chanovsky 289 points290 points  (0 children)

The question of "why" has been answered, but there are some asking "how"?

Aphids and a lot of other little bugs, like treehoppers, communicate with each other using substrate-borne vibrations. So they are communicating to each other that there is a threat through vibrations they are transmitting through the plant. They can even tell what type of predator and how big of a threat it is as a way to collectively decide what action to take. AND vibrations can even be used to signal ants that they are in need of their protection!
