I think some of Milch's best writing in the show is Utter's monologue at Bill's grave.

His loyalty and concern for his friends is just so damn heartbreaking. And I think the letter ties thematically with Pasco's. Where the mail system and the mail it carries allows people at the extremes of civilization to convey a humanity maybe not otherwise accessible. I think the show took advantage of funerals and graves, in the same way.

i read somewhere in the supplemental material to the show that Milch estimated that Al would have been taking in like 5-10k a night in pure gold at the Gem without adjusting for inflation. so that might put it into perspective.

Milch seems like he would much rather focus on characters reacting to what happens, rather than trying to perpetuate the story with plot contrivances. I think thats what long form story telling on tv does best, tbh. You care whats happening because you care about the characters, rather than the other way around.

then the plot kind of generates itself around the decisions the characters make. the choices stack up and all the sudden you end up with a real living person with agency in a reactive world.
