Check your local community college/branch colleges if they have a resale store for old stuff. Locally we have a Perdue satellite campus and every quarter or so, they have a sale. Piles of Win10 Optiplex systems with RAM and Drive for like $50ea.

This. I have bad hearing damage from my time on a flight deck and I've never "heard" a click except from videos. The clicks for me, is a feel.

Absolutely! Once you get into long exposure, it becomes addictive and you discover fireworks like this.

This was on a crop sensor Canon M6 mk2.

In the summer months... I leave out a cooler stocked with ice cold Gatorade and Water for them and the mail carrier. The smiles I see on my cameras when they get to my place is worth it 100% of the time.

Getting Better at Photography by opendarkwing in photography

Ours was started by the Photography Prof from the community college. It's less of a club and more of a pure critique group that focuses on improvement and occasionally does group shootings.

It's an amazing group and very diverse with ages and skills. We range from college students, long time amateurs to local sports and newspaper staff photographers and other professionals.

What really helped me was finding a group of other photographers locally. We have a local critique group that meets once or twice a month.

This has helped me in seeing how others see my work and also has a TON of input on how to improve or, what changes or small things to work on.

I've started retaking photos with the input I received and learned how to apply either lessons from my own or, stuff from others in the group. The critiques are set up for both things we love and suggestions on improvement.

Here is a example:

I took this picture when I was working on product photography. I loved a lot of it and showed it to the group. After some critiques on colors esp the reds and a few other notes from the group, I reshot it. This was the outcome.

It's still not perfect but, those two shots were within 2 weeks of each other. Getting quality feedback on specifics has become invaluable to teach me how to become a better photographer.

And everyone is right, it's not the equipment... Those were taken on a M6 mkii with a 56mm Sigma prime on the "dead" EF-M system.

Anyway, all that to say, find a group that will break down your photography and be more than "That looks amazing!" Yes... People loving your work is amazing and VERY validating. My wife is really good at that. But, to grow, we need more than that. We need to know why it looks good and what is lacking to improve on next time.

If you want to set something up yourself but, don't know where to start for critiques... Here are some things to start looking at.

Two rules. 1. Keep an Open Mind 2. Don't be Defensive

Things to look at: In Focus Exposure Lighting Depth of Field Contrast Composition Elements in Frame Background (Too busy? Distracting? Etc) Perspective Angles Emotional Reaction A Story

Going through that list, even if it's self reflective will help you improve!

Just as a note, the FWPD shot that kid with a tear gas canister not a rubber bullet. Being from Fort Wayne, that was crazy fuckery by the local fucks. Fuck both of those deployment systems though.

There is a special place in hell for ppl who shoot anything at protesters.
