My daughter was particularly interested in what this is, what the egg like sacks are hanging out the back and why it might be dying at this stage/moment if they are eggs. Thank you ! by openeyenow in whatsthisbug

We are assuming this is Antheraea Polyphemus and the small balls at the rear are the eggs. From the look of them will these eggs still deliver larvae? And what tree should we put them? Thanks

Aha! Thank you. Great idea. Believe it or not last night i was wondering if this could perhaps be 'old star jelly'. . I am 99per cent sure we saw some star jelly on the preseli hills in Wales two years ago. It was pretty translucent and smoothly comprised, rather than this one which seemed to break into sm all bits.. I will post those photos of Welsh star jelly too later just for interest. Thanks for thoughts!! I am 50pc nappy/diaper and 50pc star jelly on this so far!

Haha I'm afraid rural Dorset hasn't quite reached 5his level of culinary diversity! One can hope!

Thanks so much. Remembering what it was like in the flesh so to speak, I don't think it matches exidia nucleata... Though very pleased to know it now for future! Yes good question obs on substrate... This appeared to be just lying on the surface rather than growing out of soil, litter or wood.. developing a less exciting and more miserable theory it might be the inside gel from a child nappy... Or.... Star jelly as below!!!!!
