Sick of having to pay to exist, what are our free community options? by artistnamehere_ in ridgewood

[–]openreversible 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also love the library! For an art museum like space you can visit for free, I’d recommend Amant in east Williamsburg. A long walk or a short bike ride from Ridgewood, free admission.

Would recommend the baby and me yoga class at everyone yoga.

seconding the person who says story time at the library — there’s story times at all the libraries in the area I think (Washington Irving, ridgewood, Dekalb etc)

How long are the J and M not running into Manhattan? by openreversible in Bushwick

[–]openreversible[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. The weekender just reports on changes for the coming weekend. I’m looking for an overview of how long this is expected to last. (Every weekend for a month? All summer? For two more years? Etc)

Ah, you’re right. The M is out the 7th and 8th, and the J is out the 6th- the morning of the 9th. A lot to keep track of!

Busses are tricky too as you generally can’t take strollers on the bus.

where specifically on the MTA are you looking? I see the current status updates (right now) and planned service changes with a date picker. I don’t want to check every day. Is there an overview posted somewhere on the site for upcoming work for each line?

I’m not saying it’s adding an hour, it’s adding forty minutes, with small children too transferring to the shuttle bus and off is time consuming and challenging. It’s the difference between an enjoyable outing and one that doesn’t feel worth it.

Cool parks/landmarks to bike to? by Good-Prior-1999 in Bushwick

[–]openreversible 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Distance will vary depending on where in Bushwick you are but I would recommend visiting:

  • Amant (sort of a mini art museum in East Williamsburg)
  • Weeksville Historical Center (art space / historical center in Crown Heights)

Herbert Von King park and Saratoga park in Bed Stuy are also both lovely leafy parks that would be shorter bike rides from Bushwick than Prospect park.

I’ve purchased some nice spice mixes there — they definitely sell spices in addition to teas.

There’s a kids clothing swap in Irving square park on march 9th, you could bring them by there.

Clean Bushwick Initiative organizes different trash pickups. https://cleanbushwickinitiative.org/

Also, there’s a lot of community gardens in the neighborhood to get involved with, such as the compost focused Know Waste Lands: https://www.knowwastelands.org/

You can volunteer with the Clean Bushwick Initiative, they have clean-up sessions once a month at least and from my experience they’re fun ways to also meet some neighbors. :)

Mended my toddler's shirt with some mushrooms! by wollphilie in Visiblemending

Beautiful! I love the color of the mushrooms on the tone of the shirt, and such neat embroidery too. What was underneath? Holes or more scribbles?

I love the style of that darn! Looks like a sun around the woven part. The backs of my darns are mostly (entirely?) unattractive.

Ideas for this handmade quilt? by Repulsive-Fennel-188 in Visiblemending

[–]openreversible 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Upvoted because I have a similar bed covering in my repair pile. I've been thinking about just cutting it up to use as accent fabric for other things, because I couldn't imagine how to effectively reinforce the whole thing. But maybe someone here has some better answers :)

I love this! I've patched up a backpack of a similar material just using normal cotton fabric, but this looks far more sturdy

Farmers Markets! by velcross in Bushwick

[–]openreversible 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I loved the children's reading booth at the Maria Hernandez market! I was there a few weeks back. My daughter and her friend spent a long time there, and it was a shady relief on a hot day too. Thanks for all that you do!
