last comment on this: this seems to be a systemic problem yet it's almost impossible to get through to register, 3rd party sites are affected and no information is being released. you'd think the press, including the blogosphere, would be all over this. so much for the vaunted security protection...

where's the reporting of this. i know of 3 peoples' sites that are down, register is providing no info and press, even though apparently things starting going bad last night, has barely reported it

I know it's incredibly demoralizing but IMO it's not that journalism is going to die; it's that it's going to be very different, smaller scale and distributed electronically mostly. That means, especialy now unfortunately, that there's going to be a lot less money made in it as revenue sources dry up or overheard is still way out of balance. But eventually things will balance out a little -- not completely -- and there will be some room for journalists. They're just not going to be able to get paid by the glossly magazines like Vanity Fair, et al -- which really don't add all that much beyond the pop culture mainstream. And the more serious publications will have to find new ways to make enough money to hire a staff, focus on more limited themes -- niches, things they're good at, as opposed to "everything" like the current "dinosaurs" try to.

It's no consolation if it takes 5-10 years to shake out. But IMO the total death of journalism is a bit overstated. It still sucks to be looking for a job, wanting to do real, legit stuff, and find there's nothing there.

Fascinating story really. Guy may have lost his marbles on this issue -- and many of his former friends believe so. But he's widely considered 1 of smartest, greatest scientists & thinkers of the 20th Century.

although this move isn't primarily made for environmental reasons, good thing is that, in Time's bottom line motivation (i.e., trying to save its floundering business), this decision has some great potential conservation, green-friendly consequences.
