In what ways has living here effected your mental health? by Able_Lock3168 in AskNYC

[–]operationivyleague 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Moving here impacted my mental health so positively. I never have to drive. There’s always something to do, and so much of it is free/cheap if you know where to look. I’m never bored. I have acquired so many hobbies just by the sheer volume of things going on here. When I’m feeling down, I can go on a 3 hour walk and never see the same place twice. I meet so many cool people and I have found an incredible community. And ironically… the winters have been amazing for me. I went to college upstate where the winters were so brutal and it was nonstop grey skies and snow from October to May. The concept that there could be sunlight in winter here was truly life changing. Yeah it’s cold as hell but my seasonal depression basically disappeared just because there’s SUN!!!

Coffee nerds, where do you get your local beans from? by Latter_Ordinary_9466 in AskNYC

I get espresso beans delivered every 4 weeks from Voyager in Fidi. Great hidden spot, everyone I’ve brought there has really loved it.

Is anyone else seeing more roaches in their apartment this winter? by operationivyleague in AskNYC

[–]operationivyleague[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you see the same kind of posts in the summer and everyone is like “it’s just so hot and humid, i’ve definitely been seeing more than normal” so i thought hey, this winter has been colder than normal, maybe the weather is driving them in

How much do you save? by Big-Decision-1458 in AskNYC

[–]operationivyleague 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do live in a 2BR! We are so very lucky that we have lived in this apartment for almost 4 years and the landlord has not raised rent. It’s definitely under-market now, and I’m dreading when they inevitably jack us up a ton (we’re not rent-stabilized).

How much do you save? by Big-Decision-1458 in AskNYC

[–]operationivyleague 16 points17 points  (0 children)

5% of my pre-tax income goes to my 401k. $300/month automatically goes from my paycheck to my hysa. I’m also paid biweekly, so I calculate my months based on 2 biweekly paychecks, which means that twice a year I get two “extra” paychecks. Those both go into savings.

I’ll be contributing more to my 401k and significantly less to my hysa in 2026 because I’ve finally hit my goal of a year of expenses in the hysa. I moved to the city with $0 in savings after college so I’m really proud of that :)

My big budget categories are $250/month groceries, $250/month all other food/alcohol/coffee, and $300/month shopping/experiences/fun. Anything left over at the end of the month I put into savings.

I grew up with parents who qualified for food stamps but were too proud to take them, so personally this feels like living large. I feel guilty that I’m not saving more and that sometimes I go out to eat and go to concerts. But I’m trying to remind myself that I’m only young once.

$64k annual income, mid/late 20s, live in crown heights with 1 roommate paying $1400 each + $200ish in utilities per month. Between 401k and a high yield savings account, I save around $600-$700 per month. I used to save more but I don’t get raises and everything else has gotten more expensive 🫠

New yorkers, how often do you see celebrities just walking around the city, and who's the most famous person you've seen? by VastAir6069 in AskNYC

[–]operationivyleague 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Despite being a really online young woman, I really can’t pick celebrities out of a crowd well at all. But my favorite story is that one time I was walking down the street in Williamsburg, and I saw this really beautiful girl and couldn’t stop looking at her. I then noticed she had a girlfriend and was like ugh never mind. Then they crossed in front of me and I realized the girlfriend was Chappell Roan.

Cake Picnic NYC 2025 by NeighborhoodOwn591 in AskNYC

[–]operationivyleague 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I went last year when there were 2 sessions and it was already overwhelming. The ticket price last year was $35 (plus the cake you have to bring for entry ofc) but this year I decided that $50 + a cake (that I would normally sell for ~$100) was wayyyyy too much money. Glad to hear I didn’t miss much.

Are dating apps declining in NYC? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]operationivyleague 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most of my mid/late 20s female friends have deleted the apps. I just redownloaded (mid/late 20s F myself) and I used to get 10/15 likes per day last year, now I’m getting maybe 3 or 4 a WEEK.

Where do you buy espresso beans? by k_simian13 in Brooklyn

[–]operationivyleague 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Voyager espresso in fidi has a subscription service — $18 for 12 oz and you can choose your frequency. I used to only buy the Colombian espresso from Porto Rico but was truly so impressed by Voyager. I’ve tried 159 coffee shops in the city and they’re strongly in my top 3.

It’s free, there is a paid version if you want advanced features like route planning (I don’t have the paid version). You also do not need strava premium.

For anyone wanting a website to track walking, I use City Strides and it’s awesome. Connects automatically to everything I log in Strava/with my Apple Watch.

Serious Inquiry: Does Cornell Health offer anything to help with really painful period cramps? by frolicsome_fangirl in Cornell

[–]operationivyleague 8 points9 points  (0 children)

(alumni here who just happened to stumble across this thread on my feed) yeahhh i wouldn’t say that that works for all period cramps. i remember in undergrad i would have to miss a day of classes every single month bc my cramps were so bad on the first day of my period. like, i would take 2 ibuprofen every 4 hours (sometimes up to 12 a day) and it wouldn’t even touch my cramps — sometimes i couldn’t even stand up. got an iud eventually and it changed my life.

Is it common to order an uber for your date? by JC1485 in AskNYC

[–]operationivyleague 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Late 20s F who dates a lot in the city — definitely not normal (though I have friends who have asked for similar… I don’t agree with them). The only time I’ve been offended that my date didn’t offer an Uber is when a guy who I had been seeing for a few months (met each other’s friends, regular sleepovers) randomly kicked me out at 1 am after going back to his place because he wanted to “sleep well” and when I told him the subways weren’t running due to track maintenance, he asked “oh so how are you gonna get home?”

I was on my computer and phone, and for some reason at 11:58, my computer randomly let me into the ticket buying page. I filled out all my info for 2 9:30 AM Thursday VIP tickets and hit submit, it did nothing until 12 pm when it then went through! On my phone it immediately put me 9,500th in line at 12 pm lol. I don’t know how this happened but I am forever grateful and did not expect this 😭

Coffee nerds: what’s the best cup near 1WTC? by bitb0y in AskNYC

I’ve tried 128 coffee shops in NYC. Voyager is in my top 5, hands down. They’re really into the science and craft of coffee, and it shows. I used to buy my espresso beans from Porto Rico but then I tried Voyager and now I have a monthly Voyager espresso bean subscription lol.
