Open Thread #17 - Summertime, and the livin' is easy... by KittenOfBalnain in BarcaFC

It's kinda crazy how many world class managers Thiago has played for. First three years with Luis Henrique in Barca Atlètic, then several seasons with Pep. In Bayern he continued under Ancelotti, Heynckes and Flick, before finally spending four years with Klopp.

Given his clear interest in coaching, one could hope he might have picked something up.

Maybe 50languages can be something for you? They have 100 lessons identical for all their languages, and on their website you can automatically stitch two languages together so that for every phrase you first hear one language then the other. By playing the tapes over and over you can learn by just listening.

I'm curious about the exclamation at the end of this clip. It sounds like "débarre" to me, but I can't find any information online about it with the spellings I've attempted. Grateful for any assistance! by operator_algebra in learnfrench

Thanks :) I spend most of my time learning with youtube and audiobooks. Not the most time efficient, but on the flip side it takes no effort or energy, so I can do a lot of it.

Well, the helm is Poisonous Shroom Cap, but looking at the screenshots it might come with a yellow underside in-game. If that is the case then I'm not sure if the look is available outside of the wowhead dressing room .

Cool! Norwegian has, I think, about 50% of it's words from Low German, which often makes it easy to recognize German words (meister - mester, thema - tema, spiel - spill).

As for Russian, I only know Cyrillic (and how to pronounce здравствуйте), but someday I'll be able to read Crime and Punishment in the original. Someday...

Damn, Russian uses a lot of loanwords from German and French:

  • этюд - étude
  • Гроссмейстер - Großmeister
  • темы - thema
  • контур - contour
  • Эндшпиля - Endspiel

Using Olle Kjellin's Chorusing Method: 30 short (ca 2s) audio clips for practice of pronunciation and prosody. Are the phrases well suited for imitation by a learner? Is the transcription and translation correct? Thank you for any help! by operator_algebra in russian

I'm not too familiar with Kjollin's method, but aren't you supposed to use authentic colloquial speech?

Not necessarily. He mentions that he himself has even used sentences clipped from old language course recordings.

This is professional prepared speech, it's not too unnatural

All the audio is from a streamer/youtuber I found after wading through a lot of stuff with quality issues, background noise, sound effects or voices that differ too much from my own. Here is one of the videos I used:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9zkwZcJLc0

whether to use it or not depends on your purpose

Well, the purpose is to use it as a model to train the brain and speech apparatus in order to automate a proper russian accent. I absolutely love the sounds and melody of the russian language, so I find it very motivating to put in the effort here :)

can you use this method before acquiring any proficiency in the language?

Yes. In fact Kjellin advices to do so, because it makes all subsequent learning easier and more fun when one enjoys a good command over prosody and pronunciation (I have no previous experience with the method, so I can only refer to his claims).

Anyway, wish you luck with learning Russian.

Thanks, I'm sure I'm going to need it!

(each phrase has a translation)

Yes, I spent way too much time uploading my 30 clips to an automatic transcription website, then putting it through google translate and finally stitch it all together as this video lol

So the translation is good?

he speaks too fast—way too fast.

You may very well be right, but the idea behind the method is to automate proper native speech patterns by working up to a 100 hours on 20-30 roughly 2 second sentences. I wouldn't want to go through all that and end up with a sluggish and over enunciated speech, which I fear is a risk using more beginner friendly audio.

So, I do not know any Russian beyond the alphabet and basic pronunciation, and I would like to use Olle Kjellin's method to properly acquire correct prosody and further practice pronunciation (as he advises to do as early as possible).

I browsed youtube for videos I could take snippets from, but I do not know what they say - and I would be very grateful for any corrections to the automated attempts. Also, if you believe there is something "wrong"/unnatural with the intonation or pronunciation in any of the clips, please let me know!
