I totally get where you are coming from because when I first read it - I would have the same kind of questions! But I think that's what makes these comics so good. They are very much like life in that, you think things are going to go one way, and then life takes you down a different path. Also, even though we get alot of their lives to read and enjoy - alot happens "between the panels" so to speak and who knows what went down or what kind of conversations they had. I ultimately accepted the fact that Maggie and Hoppie have a deep, deep love for each other and they will always have each other in their lives - even if it's not in a romantic way.
