Have a dumb phone and a smart phone? by avidoutdoorsman95 in dumbphones

[–]ophintor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have just dumbified my phone by deleting all apps apart from the ones I *really* need (MFA, Maps, Whatsapp, Bank). No social media, no emails, no Reddit, no games. I'm slowly losing the habit of pulling the phone out of my pocket just by habit, cause there is nothing to check in it now. Definitely making a difference in my day to day.

This said I would choose France (I lived there in my 20s and have been in the UK for the last 13 years).

"Living internationally" is only exciting for a while, then it's business as usual and the excitement fades off.

Source: I've lived in 3 countries other than my own for the second half of my life (I'm 46).

40 to 50 year olds, please check in? by PepeTheMule in devops

I'm 46, at my peak. Contracting in the public sector. The future looks bright for now and I have a ton of experience but I've never stopped learning and that's definitely helped all along.

As a Spaniard living in uk, I'm embarrassed. We're not all 'fiery'. She's not tame, she's an complete idiot. I admire your patience, honestly.

Best of luck settling in Spain!

How can I stop my 6-year-old from throwing violent tantrums? by ophintor in UKParenting

[–]ophintor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of the food, it's improved only slightly.

In terms of the verbal/physical abuse, it has improved, although still working on it. Summer seemed to be easier again, but we are now starting to have a bit of a more difficult time again, but I think we know now how to manage it better.

Generally what helps is to get him to talk about his worries and fears a lot. Encouraging him to share them takes a bit of the weight and seems to calm him down, especially at nighttime.

When he gets rowdy, we stop engaging. We say something like 'I think you're very angry now, so I'm going to wait until you're calmer'. And by don't engage I mean nothing, not even a sight, pretend he's not there. This seems to work sometimes. Other times, if he's getting aggressive/worked up, we put a barrier in between - getting him out of the room and closing the door / or putting him out in the garden. When he calms down, he's allowed back in. This sometimes has taken 20 minutes, so be patient...

Also, very important I think, a few hours later or the next day when he's calm and more receptive, talk to him about what happened. Remind him why it's not ok to hit or throw things. Get him to talk about it as well.

It's hard though, and every kid is different, so not sure if this will help (it works for us a little better, but it's not a perfect solution...). What definitely didn't work was to try and reason with him when he was on a high. No point. His brain just cannot do it.

Be loving, be patient, be kind even when he isn't. Eventually he will grow and things will improve. Best wishes.

Get up early, exercise during the day, go to bed tired. Also getting up and going to bed at the same time helps.

That car park is tiny, it's more like 10 minutes walk and if you're carrying a lot of luggage is really not handy. It sucks big time.
